About the Author
The creative side of Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami's (SDG) is clearly visible in the expression of his poetry, writings and art. But his journey wasn't always imbued with artistic freeform expression and the lighthearted indulging of his creative impulse. Rather, his young adulthood and middle-aged years were marked by a heavily regimented life, one that carried the weight of both spiritual discipline and organizational responsibility. His was a severe if also blissful path, full of dutiful action and devotional delight. As a serious student under Prabhupada's tutelage in bhakti since as early as 1966, he temporarily left the spontaneous world of improvisation of self-expression for the more structured life of a monk. Yet he did manage ISKCON Press in Boston for some time and became editor-in-chief for Prabhupada's Back to Godhead magazine, which gave him an outlet for his creative writing. By 1972, in recognition of his serious commitment to ISKCON, he was awarded sannyasa, which is a formal stage of life in the Vedic social order, indicating learning and renunciation. As a sannyasi, he would travel the world, sharing knowledge of Krishna Consciousness with others and helping his teacher manage the movement. Along these lines, he had two years earlier in 1970 become a Governing Body Commissioner (GBC), that is, a managerial authority in the movement, and for a brief period between January and July of 1974, he served as personal servant and secretary to Prabhupada himself. His first two books were Readings in Vedic Literature, which was a scholarly overview of the Vedic tradition with special attention to Vaishnavism, and, soon after his guru's departure, Srila Prabhupada-lilamrta, an exhaustive multivolume work on the life and times of his spiritual master. Numerous books would follow, even as he continued to help manage Prabhupada's movement and, eventually, he would initiate many disciples of his own. But in due course, exhaustion and poor health caused him to pull back from management and formal involvement as a leader of the movement. His books started to engage free-writing techniques, almost Kerouac-ian in nature, but, as always, he continued to keep Prabhupada and Lord Krishna as the main foci. His contribution is valued and well-read with Spanish, Italian, Russian and another 40 languages in translation both by GN Press and BBT publishers. Being the senior most disciple of Srila Prabhupada he continues to inspire his followers over the years.

An open and honey look into the life of SDG

I couldn't put this book down after I started it. Satsvarupa dasa Goswami is open, honest and humble in presenting glimpses into his life before and after meeting Srila Prabhupada.
I'm eagerly awaiting the next volumes in the series to be released. Haribol!

A Wonderfull Book!

Like a previous reviewer before mine, I am thoroughly enjoying this book and can't put it down except to write this review because I couldn't wait to finish the book before writing it. First of all, I enjoy books written by the early group of HK devotees. So far, I have already read books by Hayagriva, Achyutananda, Steve Rosen about Brahminanda, Umapati (on kindle) and now Satsvarupa'a book. The years of 1966 through 1977 were very special to say the least. Satvarupa's book is the longest because he skillfully alternates brief vignettes from his life before and after his diksa. While I would like to favorably characterize all of the above devotees written and written about (Rosen's book), because of space considerations I will limit my remaining comments to Satsvarupa's book. It is literate. Satsvarupa writes that his style and approach to the book was inspired by Mark Twain's own multi volume autobiography. One reviewer compared Satsvarupa's style with Jack Kerouac. I fully agree with both assessments. The book's title includes the words, "Volume 1." Satvarupa is as of this writing now 75 years old. I am 67 myself. Hopefully, I will not have to wait too long before volume 2 is written and published. But on second thought perhaps we can all enjoy volume 2 together in Vrindavan following the complete disappearance of this materialistic maya influenced and illusionary world. Thank you Satsvarupa - "Every town and village" indeed!

So it is of no surprise to me that this little book is a real gem, which you should read, use and keep handy for continuous reference. The days have long gone when a traditional sales approach was sufficient for major accounts. The Not so Complete Guide.......

I bought this book as a source book for self sufficiency ideas, what I found was a book with a lot of ideas but not enough substance to even warrant the purchase. This book was written as an introduction to the basic concepts of farm and off grid living. The topics are covered in such a limited fashion that the detail needed to implement the concepts is not in the book. This book needs more technical information and needs to be about one hundred pages longer to cover all that is in the table of contents.

An Excellent Inroduction to the Self-Sufficient Lifestyle

In these times of international and domestic unrest, rampant increases in food and fuel prices and general discontent, the thought of leaving the rat race and setting up a small farm doubtlessly has appeal to nearly all of us. Before you do so however, I strongly recommend that you read this book. The authors having been living a self-sufficient lifestyle for decades and are well qualified to share their experience.

The book covers a wide range of topics and while certainly not exclusive (there have been entire books written on areas which they cover in a few pages) they do provide a nice overview of topics such as location selection, alternate energy options and water supplies as well as tasks such as home soap making, candle making, beer and wine making etc. The greater portion of the book is devoted to crop growing and a wide variety of crop choices and planting styles are covered. The specific care needs of each plant are covered as are harvesting requirements. The raising of farm animals, including though not limited to cows, chickens, goats, ducks and pigs are also discussed. Most helpful I think are the A-Z checklists for various herbs and crops and the "Planning the Year Calendar" which outlines the various farm related activities which must be done throughout the year.

While the Bridgewaters are residents of England and their book has a somewhat UK centric focus their helpful address section has many American companies and their advice is readily applicable to prospective self-sufficient types in the USA.

SAVE YOUR MONEY!

This is NO WHERE NEAR a "complete" guide! It gives you an overview, but you could never achieve self suffiency with this book alone. There is simply not enough detail in any of the areas. For livestock you get about 2 pages, maybe 3 that give no where near enough info. If you are just wondering about some basic stuff, it could be a interesting read. But if you are planning on trying to "live it out" skip this book altogether. One of the BEST is Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living. Now with that, you can become almost 100% self sufficient!

The White-Slave Traffic Act, commonly known as the Mann Act, was passed in the United States in 1910 and made it a felony to transport any ‘woman or girl for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose’ across state lines. It was designed to fight a perceived growth of prostitution, especially the trafficking in of women from Europe to America. Pliley, drawing largely from the records of the Bureau of Immigration, Bureau of Investigation, and then Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), examines the way these agencies used the expansion of their powers less to protect women and more to control sexuality according to their own conservative culture. Using case files, Pliley shows how ideas about women’s sexuality and the vagueness of the phrase ‘any immoral purpose’ were used to police sexual and moral boundaries. She illustrates how the law was more often employed by the FBI before World War II to prosecute unapproved premarital, extramarital, and interracial sexual relationships, than to prosecute human trafficking…A valuable contribution for those curious about the history of women, gender, and sexuality, as well as those interested in the role of policing and the FBI in the cultural and political history of the U.S. in the 20th century. Overall, this book is well written and illustrated, but requires effort to get through. This isn't a criticism of the author, who did an outstanding job of conveying information and clearly explaining complex concepts and topics, but reflects the depth of the material. In my opinion a copy of this book should be among the top five in any serious software test professional's library.

Focused on techniques and on doing them right

Books on software testing fall into two basic categories: (1) those that deal with the test process and (2) those that deal with the actual techniques. Most of the more recent books fall into the first category; although there is some degree of crossover in many of the books. This book, however, deals strictly with techniques. The author doesn't dwell on the process or the associated administrative tasks, although he does touch upon them.
Techniques are presented within the context of formal mathematics. This isn't because the material is academic - it's all based on realistic testing scenarios - but, instead, provides you with proven and effective techniques for testing software in a systematic manner. Because many testers have not been exposed to the formal techniques and underlying math, the first section covers the basics: discrete math, set theory and graph theory. Once you've mastered the basics, which are heavily used in the chapters that address the actual techniques, you'll have all the knowledge that you need to go forward.
The remainder of the book is divided into four sections, each of which covers a specific type of testing. These types are: functional, structural, integration and system, and object-oriented testing. For each there are two to three techniques, plus a retrospective on the section that ties everything together. Also, issues and factors associated with each test type, as well as testing in the whole are discussed, giving you a complete picture of the full suite of testing categories.
Overall, this book is well written and illustrated, but requires effort to get through. This isn't a criticism of the author, who did an outstanding job of conveying information and clearly explaining complex concepts and topics, but reflects the depth of the material. In my opinion a copy of this book should be among the top five in any serious software test professional's library.

Excellent book on Software Testing!

This is one of the best books on Software Testing I've seen. Not only is the content great (not a lot of the usual fluff - but some "real meat" with examples), but the layout of the book is fantastic as well. It's very easy to just find a topic you are interested in at the moment and get some detail - fast. Excellent job on both content and format!!

Practical, Thorough, Condensed, & a Great Read! :)

"Software Testing: A Craftsman's Approach" is one of the those rare books that has taken on the problems of the Verification Engineer. As all of us know, most books written today are targeted for the development audience and even many of these are either poorly written or try to cover too much area. This book however, though broad in its scope, does a good job of treating all of the important areas in verification and testing.

You will find the book well structured, informative and actually intuitive to navigate through. Each chapter builds on the previous chapters to provide the engineer with a clear idea of all the steps and intricacies involved in testing and verifying complex programs. It can therefore be used by the beginner as a source book for specific test applications, or by the team lead or manager who needs to know more about the actual scope and planning of a complex testing project. This book surely fills a great void in the area of publications software verification.
