Review
"Psychology can work in at least two ways, as this book clearly shows. First, we can gain psychological benefits from physical activity. This is encapsulated in the early chapters on quality of life, stress management, self-perceptions, and mood. Second, we need to understand how to assist people to become more active. This is where chapters on theories ans models, motivation, determinants, and strategies come in. [. . .] I addition, psychology is also about behavior change across different groups and settings. The authors deal with this by writing on young people, older adults, and gender issues. One size does not fit all." --From the foreword by Stuart J. H. Biddle, Professor of Active Living & Public Health, Victoria University

The text is just okay since much of is pulled from Barkow's previous books which are great reads. The statistics, taken without attribution and misused, are a profound disappointment.

One of the best books on grief
By Diane Kronmeyer
Sandra pulls you in to her personal life and grief and showsyou not only how to survive it yourself, but how to help others aswell. It is heartwarming and honest. I've read the first version, "Living Through the Loss of Someone You Love" and this new version has all of the same poignant personal stories plus more insight and help on the grief process. Sandra offers up her own personal--and successful--experience in addition to the "self-help" format. As you're reading this book and wake up grief-stricken in the middle of the night and ask yourself, "Is this normal?" the answer you get is from someone who's been there--and who also shows she truly is an expert. Great to give to someone who is grieving when you just don't have the words yourself.

Healing for the Emptiness Inside
By Ferree Hardy
If the loss of your loved one has left a gaping hole in your heart, this book provides keys to healing. The author's 38-year-old husband died of brain cancer after 16 months of treatment, leaving a 10-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter, and stress-induced lupus to manage. Her welcoming and conversational writing style, plus years of experience as a teacher, funeral home representative and editor for Focus On The Family make this a book appropriate for caring friends and caregivers in addition to those grieving the loss of a loved one.
Each of the 13 chapters are well-organized with clearly marked points for easy reference. A list of simple reminders at the end of each chapter provides helpful summaries and quotes. A study guide makes this book useful for grief support groups and widows discussion groups.
I especially recommend "Will I Ever Be Whole Again?" for widows of cancer, widows with children, and as a guide to grief during the first two years of loss.

Read it and read it again...
By Kensington
I bought this book when I was seeking a book to understand the things my sister in law was doing after her husband died. It just so happened that the book I went to find was not there, and I bought this one. I read it, and I read it again. I've read it numerous times and highlighted things that touched me deeply. I always recommend it to anyone I know who is facing grief, or wants to understand and help someone who is.

Futhark: A Handbook of Rune Magic, by Edred Thorsson

Runes are the ancient Norse alphabet used for communication, divination, and magical work. In Futhark, American runologist Edred Thorsson introduces readers to the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, their definitions, and mystic properties.

The runic system of magic and mysticism is one of the most powerful forms of metaphysical thought available to the Western world. This bestselling classic book on Runes continues to be required reading for those who seek true knowledge of the mystery of the Runes.

Thorsson's presentation of this powerful system is lucid and profound and provides a valuable tool for spiritual transformation and self-development.

Good book, if you study some background first
By S. Plowright
This was the first popular esoteric rune book to contain some real academic research on runes. Thorsson's PhD gives him the background, research skills, and access to sources to put together a very impressive work. The awkward, dry, scholarly writing style adds to the perceived credibility.

Unfortunately, as we can see from other reviews, the average reader tends to accept the book as historical facts about the original runic traditions of Viking & pre-Viking times. Although the book is a cut above the New-Age pack, claims of authenticity are misleading.

Although it contains some good research that most of the other rune manuals lack, the esoteric ideas are largely based on the Armanen system invented in Germany in the early 1900s. The Armanen system was typical of the occultism of the day, mixing romanticised & poorly researched ideas about runes with poorly understood techniques borrowed from yoga, and a touch of Western ceremonial magic (itself mainly descended from Hebrew sources). It was a mish-mash of systems not so different from the anything-goes New-Age fusions of today.

The only problem with the book is that it does not always clearly separate recent inventions from pre-Christian sources, leaving the average reader with the impression that it describes a pre-Christian esoteric tradition. It also contains a fair amount of speculation about historical sources that is not clearly identified as such, or made to look more credible than it really is (eg his argument for rune postures). To be fair, if you have done some extra study, and read carefully, the distinctions are often there, but they tend to be worded so that the average reader will not notice when they enter the realms of UPG.

This book is useful to those interested in esoteric runology, but those interested in re-creationist or historical rune magic need to take it with a grain of salt. Read it, but first do the groundwork and look at the historical facts, then feel free to make your own speculations rather than rely on the imagination of the popular authors.

For those interested in a survey of real historical evidence and examples of rune magic, I recommend Runic Amulets and Magic Objects.

Worth reading, if you can follow it
By Ingeborg S. Nordn
This book first came out in the late 1980's, and many rune magicians still consider it a classic. Several later authors, including Gundarsson, have been inspired by _Futhark_ to some extent.
Thorsson discusses the meanings and magical uses of each rune in detail, backing them with references from Norse pagan texts and Germanic folklore. He does occasionally allude to other esoteric traditions, but this doesn't feel as intrusive as it does in some other books. (My only complaint here is the table of astrological and Tarot correspondences at the end of the book; the runes, in my opinion, should be able to stand on their own as a magical system.)
I would still recommend this book ten years after I first bought it, although Thorsson's language may be too dry and academic for popular readers.

THE KEY TO WHAT'S BEHIND THE FIRST DOOR
By Tyr Shadowblade (TM)
This book is REQUIRED READING for those who would dare seek true knowledge of the runes. Other books purporting to reveal the mysteries of the runes are best left to the New Agers -- this is the real deal. Be advised that even though this "introductory" text is "for beginners," it is only for those who truely wish to KNOW. There is no mass-market fluff here! Although I am not entirely in agreement with the teachings of Mister Flowers (Thorsson) and the Rune-Guild, this is, by far, the best book I've seen on the subject matter . . . better even than "Thorsson's" later books for more advanced studies. He has written a number of books on the runes, and, even though I have a working knowledge of runelore myself, a few of them were difficult to read. Fortunately, "Futhark" is not one of them. The only real criticism I have is that, personally, I find the concept of "runic postures" rather silly. Visualize them, carve them, stain them with your blood -- but don't go striking a pose! Aside from that, this was an excellent book, and I recommend it highly.

A good reference
By Kris
This is a nice, thorough handbook that gives just enough detail to allow you easily find something, and in each section lists plenty of references to dig deeper if you want.

The author seems to get the right balance between documenting everything and just pointing out things which may not be obvious or problem spots.

He has a nice format of how things are laid out; it makes sense and is easy to grab for quick lookup. As I am not a mathematician, I appreciate the glossary of math terms related to integration.

Excellent book but is basically a review of what I should know (but forgot or neglected). Didn't cover the category of integration I am interested in though. If you don't have a books dedicated to elementary integration get this; and the price was reasonable.

The Beetle: A Mystery, by Richard Marsh

The Beetle: A Mystery By Richard Marsh The Beetle (or The Beetle: A Mystery) is an 1897 horror novel by the British writer Richard Marsh, in which a polymorphous Ancient Egyptian entity seeks revenge on a British Member of Parliament. It initially out-sold Bram Stoker's similar horror story Dracula, which appeared the same year. The story is told from four points of view, which generally flow from each other with limited scene repetition. In order, the four narrators are Robert Holt, Sydney Atherton, Marjorie Lindon, and Augustus Champnell. The story is written down as elaborate testimonies gathered by Champnell, who is a detective and who, despite only appearing during his own narration, provides the context of the antagonists' motives and the wrap-up of how the rest of the cast fared after the adventure. The events described are insinuated to be based on fact and several names used in the novel are supposedly altered to protect the identities of those involved. The year is not given, or rather left ambiguous at 18—, but everything takes place over a three day-period around June 2 on a Friday. Robert Holt, a clerk who has been looking all day for a place to work, which he hasn't had for a long time, seeks shelter and food at a workhouse in Fulham. He is, however, denied, and in the dark and rain walks on looking for another place to stay. He comes upon a road occupied by only two houses, one of which in terrible state. He finds that one to have the window open and invites himself in. This proves to be a mistake, as he comes face to face with what is later revealed to be a beetle. He is hypnotized into paralysis and the beetle takes their human form again, if covered largely by a blanket; an unsightly man with distinctly female behavior who is later referred to as the Arab. The Arab accuses Holt of being a thief and promises to treat him like one, though they make clear they have use for them. Feeding him but taking his clothes and forcing a kiss on him that appears their way of feeding themself from him, the Arab sends Holt nearly naked to the home of Paul Lessingham, a member of the House of Commons, to steal the contents of a protected drawer in his desk. If Holt is to encounter Lessingham, he is instructed to say "The Beetle", which should incapacitate him. Despite having no experience with burglary, Holt succeeds, in part because the Arab sees through his eyes and orders him onward. Before he can leave with the contents, letters tied together with a ribbon, Lessingham confronts him. In a voice not his, Holt shouts "The Beetle" twice, forcing Lessingham to shiver in a corner and allowing him to get away by jumping through the window. In the streets, he is accosted by another man, who asks if he committed a crime against Lessingham. The man is pleased by the prospect and lets Holt go, who delivers the letters to the Arab. The Arab finds they are love letters from one Marjorie Lindon and proclaims they will hurt Lessingham through her.

A Forgotten Classic Now Available
By PhineasB
I first came across references to this forgotten classic in the works of British occultist Kenneth Grant. Firmly rooted in the Victorian appetite for mystery and the supernatural, 'The Beetle' is a masterpiece of horror and occult fiction. Originally published in 1897, the same year as Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', Richard Marsh's highly original creation at one point actually outsold Stoker's famous vampire primer. Like Stoker's other masterpiece, 'The Jewel of Seven Stars', which was brought to the screen in the seventies with Hammer's stylish retelling as 'Blood From the Mummy's Tomb' (and the forgettable 'The Awakening'), 'The Beetle' would be well served with a film adaptation, although it might be hard pressed to find an appreciative audience today.

For those with a taste for occult-inspired fiction along the lines of H.P. Lovecraft, Arthur Machen, Bram Stoker, Sax Rohmer, Algernon Blackwood and others, 'The Beetle' will not disappoint. See also the cheaper Wordsworth edition, with a fine introduction by David Stuart Davies.

An early fiend find
By Kay A. Douglas
"A face looked into mine, and, in front of me, were those dreadful eyes. Then, whether I was dead or living, I said to myself that this could be nothing human, -nothing fashioned in God's image could wear such a shape as that. Fingers were pressed into my cheeks, they were thrust into my mouth, they touched my staring eyes, shut my eyelids, then opened them again, and-horror of horrors!-the blubber lips were pressed to mine-the soul of something evil entered into me in the guise of a kiss."

Published in 1897, the same year as Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Beetle is a classic Victorian weird/sensation novel, written in wonderfully ripe, overwrought prose, and featuring (of course!) a sinister oriental figure with the power to transform himself. This fiend persecutes and hypnotically asserts control over an upstanding British man, the hero of the novel.

In many ways, this sort of novel foreshadowed Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu novels, but it also fed into the late 19th-century fascination with all things Egyptian. Later this sort of tale would be the grist for 20th century mummy films and Boris Karloff's mesmerizing stare, but unfortunately The Beetle never seems to have made the leap into popular modern culture the way that Dracula did. A pity, as this is an equally engrossing supernatural tale.

A quintessential fin-de-siecle novel
By Jay Dickson
Actually outselling DRACULA when they both came out in 1897, Richard Marsh's THE BEETLE was much talked about for years after its publication and even turned into a silent film. It's not as sustained as Bram Stoker's most famous novel and drags off a bit towards the end in a complicated railway chase, but sections of it are as frightening as anything Stoker ever wrote. Like DRACULA, Marsh's novel involves an Eastern invader with supernatural powers coming to England to attack a beautiful woman; it also invokes a whole series of tropes typical of the period, including gender confusion, fears of rampant unchecked sexual experimentation, imperialist concerns, and anxieties regarding the explosion of London's urban growth. The novel's central (and only really memorable) character is the titular Beetle, a monster from Egypt that can change its sex, its size, and its species: it comes to London to seek revenge against a politician who abandoned it decades ago in Cairo, and seeks to destroy him through his New Woman fiance. The Beetle's presence in the novel is much more terrifying than its actual plans (which are never thoroughly explained); even so, it's quite a satisfyingly terrible monster. The novel's initial quarter, told from the view of a vagrant who sneaks into a London house for shelter in a storm only to find himself completely in the Beetle's mesmeric thrall, is outstanding in its hallucinatory detail and its evocation of sensory horror.

Unlike DRACULA, the THE BEETLE became almost forgotten within a generation. In just the last decade, however, multiple editions of it have appeared, not only because it speaks to much to the scholarship of critics in the fin de siecle (such as Elaine Showalter, Roger Luckhurst, and Sally Ledger) but also because it's such a rattling good read. This thoughtfully annotated edition from Valancourt, printed on beautiful paper and with the novel's original illustrations, may well be the best out there.

Review
"Resisting the Green Dragon is the best production we have ever seen on the subject of radical environmentalism. Though many in the environmental movement have good intentions, the destructiveness of the worldview and the policies they advocate will have debilitating effects, not only on the West, but the rest of the world too." -- Jerry Johnson, President, NiceneCouncil.com

If you want to understand what Christians believe, and why
By Craig Burton
I read this book a couple of months ago. After reading some terribly innacurate reviews (if one could call opinions a review) I thought I should actually provide one, since no one else seemed interested in telling what the book is actually about. So here is a real review, from someone who loves God's creation, and has actually read this book cover to cover.

In Resisting the Green Dragon the background of the green movement is brought to light. The author is a PhD in physics, and a Christian, and he critiques many of the religious, philosophic, and scientific claims of the green movement. Anyone interested in understanding what Christians believe, or at least what the Bible teaches, about Creation and our relationship to it will find this book a great help.

The very premise of the book will not please those who are using religion, Christianity in particular, as a tool to advance environmentalist agendas. In fact, several reviewers appear to object to the very idea of critiquing the religious foundations of the green movement, and do not seem concerned to address the very questions raised. They just say the book is no good, because it dares challenge environmentalist presuppositions; clearly they have not bothered to interact with the arguments, and by the absence of any actual review I suspect they have not even read the book.

The book is *extremely* well written, and I found it hard to put it down. In fact, it is hard to believe a scientist can write so incredibly well. Given the topic, it is surprisingly humorous at times, and there were several times where I was rolling on the floor laughing. This combination alone makes this a rare and worthwhile read.

But I had to have a break, because I couldn't read it all in one sitting. The research that went into this is very deep, and the book is 270 pages, plus 30 pages of extremely well referenced footnotes for those who want to go further in their understanding, or just check sources.

Those genuinely interested in understanding the roots of the green movement, and how it seeks to modify traditional religions, will find this book very helpful. According to Dr. Bron Taylor, a leading scholar of radical environmentalism, and author of 'Dark Green Religion', "those engaged in nature-based spiritualities ... are converting many to an evolutionary worldview and an environmentalist spirituality and ethics," and this is one reason evangelical churches are "having trouble even keeping their own children in the fold." Taylor a professor of religion and nature at the University of Florida, writes (in Huffington Post)that Resisting the Green Dragon is based on "an accurate perception that there is a religious dimension to much environmentalism".

Taylor supports what he calls 'Dark Green Religion', yet he does not stick his fingers in his ears when hearing about Resisting the Green Dragon. Ignorant people do the opposite, and just say they don't like something, or that something is useless or bad, because they do not care to challenge - or have challenged - their own perceptions of the world.

Resisting the Green Dragon has seven chapters. Chapter 1 gives background about the green movement, and delves into the philosophy and reasons why environmentalism is suddenly rather dominant in society, and the world. It argues that it is extremely broad, and attracts everyone from Christians to atheists, to Zen Hollywood stars. I found this background, and discussion of Malthusianism very informative and perceptive. I think the main point of this chapter is that the green movement is not a fringe any more, but is mainstream. Nobody would deny this. Green agendas influence everthing today.

When Wanliss quotes the actual beliefs of mainstream greens, things that are not commonly known - this is disturbing. I thought that large green NGOs might be simply focussed on helping animals. Boy, was I wrong. I'm not going to send any more support to the World Wild fund for Nature (WWF), whose former president wants to be reincarnated as a killer virus "to contribute something to solve overpopulation."

In Chapter 2 Wanliss argues that the reason the green movement is so dominant today is mainly the fault of the professing Christian Church, which today embraces such interesting ideas as ecotheology and ecofeminism. This chapter was a surprise! Usually critics blame everyone except their own party. And I think, after reading the book, that I agree. Wanliss explains that with the rise of progressivism in the 20th century the Christian Church lost its focus, which is fatal to its mission: "Important as good works or social activism may be, they can never replace, displace, or substitute for the dominating focus of Christianity... to know... Jesus Christ and Him crucified."

Chapter 3 is an exceedingly careful examination of what it means that humans are created in the image of God. It was really beautiful to read the heights of glory which we have as humans. But there was real balance, sobering balance regarding human nature and pride. He admits how easily we abuse ourselves, others, and the creatures God has made. He also attacks the humanist view that we can do as we like pillaging the planet, whether because we are the pinnacle of evolution, or because we are the special 'image of God'. He writes, "Imperious human pride is unbecoming of a creature formed from dust of the Earth." It was humbling to read this Chapter, but left me feeling hopeful, at the end. He quoted Blaise Pascal approvingly: "Christianity... orders man to acknowledge that he is evil, even abominable. Yet it also bids him to desire to be like God. Without such a counterpoise, this dignity would make him horribly vain, or promotes such humiliation that would make him terribly abject."

Chapter 4 deals with those who grant that humans are special, but then who say that all creation is just as special. There is a fascinating discussion of the role of Darwin's evolution of life theory, which Wanliss argues provides the essential cosmology of the environmental movement. He gives various examples, from Richard Dawkins to Bill McKibben, to show how evolutionary thinking informs views of reality. In critiquing the evolutionary view that animals are my brothers, Wanliss argues that, "I am one with all other humans; it is the doctrine of creation, not star stuff in our veins, that makes all men natural brothers. The doctrine of star stuff makes of me an animal."

In Chapter 5 we get into the question of dominion, which God commands in Genesis 1:28. Again, the insights here are stunning as God's dominion is discussed in detail with constant reference to the Bible, and how our dominion is related. Wanliss' devotion to knowing and doing what God teaches is quite clear. He answers those who think Christians should just wait for the end and ignore our environment and not care about the health of other creatures: "Environmentalists imagine Christians think that man receives authority to crush the Earth. Not so, for the Earth and all creation is also the private property of God. If man is then granted possession of anything it is through an act of God's grace and not something to be sinfully abused."

Chapter 6 deals with the issue of sustainability, and anyone who is confused about where this (political) idea comes from, and is going, will benefit from reading this. Wanliss discusses the ideas of biodiversity, natural equilibrium, collapse, and so on, all with a very conscious reliance to see what the Bible has to say about these things.

The last chapter wraps up this excellent book, arguing that environmentalism is a religion that is incompatible with Christianity. Christians in particular, therefore, need to balance their concern for God's creation without being caught in unbiblical ways of thinking.

AGENDA 21 UNMASKED AND EXPLAINED
By jtrolla
There are many well written books that explain the real intent behind the United Nations' Agenda 21 which is a plan for a totalitarian world government under the guise of preventing a man-caused, global climatic holocaust. But this is one of the most readable and detailed accounts without smothering the reader with charts and statistics. Although written from an unabashedly Christian perspective, non-Christian readers will not find it preachy or didactic. The author is very clear in making a distinction between the facts and his interpretation of them from a Biblical viewpoint. Anyone who is serious about opposing Agenda 21 needs this book.

A must for any Christian that lives in the Western World
By J. Kilker
This is a must for us in the western world that have had the green world view invade every aspect of our lives from politics to universities and schools to even our work places and some churches. This series exposes the hidden agendas behind this movement and how they are placing the Earth above God and people.

This is a hidden attack on the church and we as Christians all need to be aware and not be sucked in by this movement. "resist the devil and he will flee you".
