The first time I met Monsieur DuQuette, at a booksellers' convention in Los Angeles, he read my fortune with tarot cards. I was about to move, he predicted. Irritated, I huffed "that was ridiculous," I'd just moved into my boyfriend's house. When I arrived home from the convention, my aforementioned boyfriend told me he'd had a change of heart and would I please move out as soon as possible! The next time I sat down with DuQuette, at the same conference (several years later in Chicago), he regaled me with witticisms and stories. I was struck by his sincerity, self-revelation, and personable nature. LMD is a wonderful writer, and this is an easy introduction to him and his work. I read My Life With the Spirits in less than three days, two of which were spent at the beach with two small children. Some silly reviewers threatened to put this book down when they read about the kitten. I almost put it down when LMD drew early profundity from the Beatles, truly dating himself, but this is mercifully quick and passing, because he immediately follows through by recounting his encounters with a real- and hilarious- magician. (And further- maybe my kids will turn up their nose at Ozzy and Metallica as fuddy cornography? Nah.) So, overall, I gained a nice introductory grasp of what Enochian magick is about, and how someone of intelligence and common sense can become a practitioner with a straight face. OK, a straight face with a smirk and a wink. There's a lot to learn about the OTO, A'.A'. and thelema, and DuQuette's bio is a great place to start. So leave the neo-goth, adolescent, pseudo-libertarians to their own work and begin here.

Somewhat Interesting

I have heard DuQuette interviewed and he seems like an interesting guy, and this book is somewhat interesting in that it narrates the events in his life that involve his magical pursuits. Some of the adventures are not very convincing---in fact some of them are pretty lame, to be honest------ and there is more story telling than actual analysis or esoteric information. It is a pleasant read but it probably will be of most interest to people who are already into this author's works and want to hear a little about his background.

An Interesting Read...

Like some others who have posted a review, it was the title that drew me to this book. Never heard of the author before, but he had a `deep in thought' stare on the cover with mysterious writings... Who could resist possible diabolical behavior with secret magical workings? What turns out, it's mostly about a typical hippie from the 70's (haha, just a fun jab) and his struggles to survive various stages in his life of faith/magick. Contempt for God is evident, but after reading the chapters of his early life in Nebraska, you can see clearly how this developed. From birth, to a brief music career, to a hard life direction all the way to Crowley and beyond, you get a clear picture of how his choices on things come forward. There are a few magick moments in the book, but like many stories of practiced magick, it could go wither way, it ~could~ have been real, or it could have just as easily been chance or imagination or strong desire. But that is up to the reader on that. There are fun moments throughout, very well written! One of my favorite parts is the `mentally mooning' of bragging psychics and/or mystics. I love that, too funny. Expect fun moments like that. To me in the end it was a brief book of reflection on self discovery for posterity. No stale braggadocio here, or impossibly na�ve claims of power like so many others. The author lays out his achievements and faults to bring together quite an interesting progressive story. I've read it several times. I have no patience or continued focus on boring things. A testament to the writer for an excellent read. Because of this book I've looked into other books by this author.

Five stars from me!

I have been on Keto diet for about three months now and just as I was getting a little bored with my usual foodie, I came to know about this book. Gave the first recipe a shot, and boy it turned out just fine! The recipes are fairly unique and the ingredients surprisingly do not call for any weird unknown ingredients!

And with the nutritional value together with the time and detailed step by step instruction, this book might become my best friend in this keto journey!

Not as thought-provoking, but better than If I Stay in many ways

First Sentence: Every morning I wake up and tell myself this: It's just one day, another twenty-four hour period to get yourself through.

How I Acquired the Book: Borrowed from my town's library.

The Review (with MINOR SPOILERS): I suppose I should start off this review by saying that Where She Went is very different from its predecessor, If I Stay. For the first half, Where She Went was very slow, dragged in the plot, and felt as if it were some new trashy teen lit. While I was reading the first half, I kept thinking, "Wow, If I Stay would be better if it had stayed alone." Where She Went certainly was not the book If I Stay was. In my opinion, although it didn't change mine, If I Stay had the potential to change people's lives. However, I can't say the same for Where She Went.

While I thought the ending of If I Stay was a very nice and sweet ending, obviously, some others did not, and that is, I suppose, what prompted Ms. Forman to write this book. Where She Went picks up three years after Mia's tragic car accident that killed her family, but not her. But this time, the story's told from Adam's point of view. In the three years that have passed, he has become a rock star. Mia, meanwhile, has reportedly become "the next Yo-Yo Ma."

That was one major complaint I had with Where She Went: the whole unrealisticness of it all. (Hey, is that even a word?) Seriously, how, after three years, are they both supposed to be ridiculously famous? The improbability of that really staggers me, and detracted a lot from my reading experience. Even Adam describes it perfectly on page 228: "It's just: Kim. You. Me. We all came from this nowhere town in Oregon, and look at us. All three of us have gone to, well, extremes. You gotta admit, it's kind of weird."

Yes, Adam, it is kind of weird. Therefore I have no idea why your creator would choose to make it so weird.

Moving on: One thing that really annoyed me in If I Stay was Mia's character. She was boring. Period. Adam is a totally different story. He's much more emotional, and much more interesting to read about. Mia, of course, is still quite boring, but now that she's in the third person, it's not quite as bad. I totally preferred Adam's voice to Mia's voice.

Where She Went, at the core, is absolutely a romance novel. Gone are the thought-provoking questions that If I Stay raised; welcome, character interaction and thoughts. I don't think everyone who liked If I Stay will like Where She Went, but I definitely liked this book better. For romance lovers and lovers of Mia and Adam, this book is a dream come true. While the first half was sluggish and unforgivable, the second half redeems this book.

I really wish Amazon would let us give half-star ratings, because I really want to give this book 3.5 stars, and this is a positive review, not a critical review. As a reference, I think If I Stay deserves 2.5 stars. So if If I Stay left you begging for more of Mia and Adam, read this. Your wish has been granted.

Better than "If I Stay"

I wonder if it is ok that I liked Where She Went so much more than its predecessor. I mean, If I Stay was all about people dying and lying in coma and there were hardly any tears in my eyes and here I spent hours sobbing over a guy's broken heart? Am I that much into emo guys?

Don't think that's the answer though. Super-emo Shiver (Wolves of Mercy Falls)'s Sam and Beautiful Creatures's Ethan didn't rock my boat and how could they with their obsessions over puffy coats, Scarlett O'Hara and leaky womb type poetry? Adam Wilde is emo of a different, Tom Mackee (The Piper's Son) kind. He is broken, messed up, hopeless, talented and he can love!

Adam's story was just so, so bitter. Throughout the book I felt that exactly like him, I was filled with pain and resentment towards Mia's decisions. The eventual release of all the pent-up anger (accompanied my uncontrollable sobs) was, I believe, as cathartic for me as it was for Adam. This book was a fantastic study of grief, loss and forgiveness. Beautifully, beautifully written.

Ladies, have you hankies ready for this one, 'cause I am tearing up again just thinking about it.

Why I Read this Book: This book is a must read for anyone who's read If I Stay. In fact, if you've already read If I Stay, chances are you been anxiously awaiting the release for the sequel. There was a pretty big cliffhanger at the end of If I Stay and if you're like me, you need to know what happens next. And you get that closure in Where She Went.

What I Liked: If I Stay was a great emotional and thought-provoking read. And because I was late jumping on the reading bandwagon (I didn't read that book until late last year), lucky for me I didn't have too long to wait for the answers that are found in Where She Went. If I Stay was first published in January of 2009, so some people have been waiting over 2 years for closure. Well wait no more, the time has finally come! Today is release day for Where She Went.

I really liked that this book was told from Adam's POV (1st person narrative). If I Stay was completely Mia's story; her traumatic experience, her story, her flashbacks. In Where She Went, we finally get Adam's side of the story; from back when Mia was in a coma from the accident until now, 3 years later. It was good to see where and how Adam and Mia each ended up 3 years after her tragic accident.

Adam pours his heart and emotions into his lyrics and shares them with the world. Every other chapter leads with a sampling of Adam's lyrics. Angst, torment and bitter emotions drip from his words.

One of my favorite lines (that accurately describes Mia's present journey) is Gran's theory on why Mia was afraid of butterflies when she was younger:

"She said it was because one day I was going to have to go through a metamorphosis like a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly and that scared me, so butterflies scared me."

What I Didn't Like: Adam was a bit annoying at times with his whining. His character has had to grieve and he's had some growing up to do. He knows that Mia hasn't had an easy road but the void is not easy for him to digest.

Overall Impression: Where She Went is a great companion novel. I got the emotional read I was expecting and the closure I needed. Gayle Forman brings a wide range of emotions to these pages, even the raw and gritty kind, and sometimes they come in waves. Have the tissues ready.

About the Author

John R. Walker is the author of thirteen textbooks and has written numerous magazine articles. Mr. Walker completed his undergraduate studies at Millersville University and has a master’s degree in Industrial Education from the University of Maryland. He taught industrial arts and vocational education for more than thirty-two years, including five years as Supervisor of Industrial Education. He also worked as a machinist for the US Air Force and as a draftsman at the US Army Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

Bob Dixon is an Associate Professor and Head of the Engineering Technology Department at Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tennessee. Bob holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Engineering Technology from East Tennessee State University and a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Tennessee. Prior to entering the education field, Bob spent over 20 years in industry working in a variety of machining, manufacturing, and engineering positions. Bob is an ATMAE Certified Senior Technology Manager and recipient of the 2005 ATMAE Outstanding Faculty of Industrial Technology Award for Region 3.

Exploring Unknown Shores

It is very tempting to turn this review into a full-flown dissertation, indeed dissertation upon dissertation, of each of the Romantic poets whom Bowra covers here and to engage him upon every point, so significant do they seem to me. Happily or regrettably, this is not possible in an Amazon review. So, here is my overview of Bowra's treatment of the English Romantic poets and their immediate successors:

One must be reminded , first of all, of the critical zeitgeist at the time when the lectures, upon which this work is based, delivered at Harvard in the late 1940's whilst Bowra was on sabbatical from his native England, were given. At the time, the "New Criticism" was all the rage and to champion the Romantic poets, at the time, was considered no less than heresy. Anyone less than an eminent Classical scholar such as Bowra would have been dismissed out of hand. Luckily, Bowra was such a Classical scholar and we thus have this marvellous survey of English Romantic poesy.

Bowra in this book, does a splendid job of explicating how the mythology of Blake was melded into the musicality of his verse without becoming bogged down in Blakean mythopoeics,and he convincingly describes Coleridge's Ancient Mariner as "a criticism of life". He is also the first writer I have read who rightfully casts Wordsworth as the tragic figure he became after losing his poetic powers, as the poet himself describes in "Intimations of Immortality".

On Shelley, he writes gloriously:

"For Shelley poetry was the only way to grasp this ultimate reality, because it must be understood not through the intellect but through the imagination....his triumph is that, through the enchantment which his poetry sets on us, we are able to explore regions of which he is the discoverer, and almost the only denizen."

He further gives a piercing reading of Keats' "Ode on a Grecian Urn" and explains why, despite Keats' exquisite sensitivity to the beauty of the physical world, or perhaps because of it, he knew that "unheard music is sweeter still" and that dwelling solely on the transitory delights of this world does not achieve the transcendent.

I've given the respective reader much more than a soupçon of what to expect from this delightful overview of what the Romantics, through their poetry, achieved, endured and the light they continue to shed on mankind in the 21st Century. Please do read this engaging book to plumb the depths further.

A superb reassessment of the English Romantics

Originally a series of lectures from 1947-48, when the Romantics were held in something less than high literary esteem, this insightful volume did much to restore them to their rightful place as major poets. The two protagonists' genuine wonder and respect for the natural world represents a profound message, yet it is simple enough for the youngest listeners to understand.

Two children have to go sledding without a sled. On the way they see evidence of animals and guess what they were. Would have been better if the illustrations would have shown the footprints, when appropriate. Saving grace: the blurbs at the end that explain how the children knew which animal had been there. Contains excellent black and white illustrations and will be of interest to the students from the 3rd grade through the 7th grade levels.

My students enjoyed this book immensely. We used it as part of our unit studying winter habitats. The illustrations are fabulous. The concept helped my students become nature detectives.

Good addition to the series

This book follows the format of the other books in the series (In the Woods, etc.). Two children hike through the woods, headed for a sledding hill. Along the way, they observe signs of animal life such as birds and small mammals. The illustrations are very detailed but not "busy," and the large format of the book encourages the readers to linger over each page. The narration is straightforward, and the plot is gently constructed with a whimsical twist at the end. No edgy, interpersonal conflict or childhood anxiety here. The book is primarily about the landscape, and only secondarily about the family that inhabits it. Kudos to the author for depicting a warm, functional family through whose eyes we observe the natural world.

As a parent of children curious about nature, this is exactly the kind of book I want to read to my kids, either at bedtime or just before we go out to explore the woods ourselves.

Material Great... Printed Product - not so much!

The textbook is excellent and insightful. As someone coming to the subject of Strategy for the first time - this book is easy to read, using simple terms and interesting material, with lots of good, clear, up to date examples - I have been completely enthused by it! I have really enjoyed reading this book and found it very useful.

However - the quality of the actual book received was disappointing. Some of the pages are printed skew, some of the extreme edges have even been cut off - so that some page numbers are missing or cut in half. And the quality of the print on glossy paper is not good - if you make pencil notes as I sometimes do, and then need to erase it/change it - the eraser takes the print clean off the page with the pencil scribblings. Whilst none of these things are completely insurmountable, it does irritate me - someone who is fanatical about maintaining the pristine nature of a new book. We pay a lot of money for these textbooks, we (I) intend to use them for reference for many years to come, but one wonders how well this book will in fact stand the reglar use?!
Also, the publisher has used a glossy paper type which is very awkward to read at night when your eyes are tired - my desk lamp (low energy tube) creates a shine on the page that results in some interesting juggling of the book to avoid! Whilst this makes the book look "nice" I would suggest that subsequent printings use a different paper.

Exploring Corp Strategy - Great Asset to own a copy

I came across this book while I was doing MBA at Leeds Met Univ (UK). This book is simply an great asset, interesting case studies with comments how they best perform, flaws etc. The whole book strictly focus on strategies (Strategic Position, Strategic Option and Strategy in Action). Very apt for students and young entrepreneurs.

They said it was in good condition and it was. Some highlighter markings in the book but i didn't mind. There was something on the cover, I don't know what it was soap or toffee, something... but I was able to get it off. I found this purchase very affordable for my pockets and the condition was as they said.i would consider purchasing from them again if need be.
