(for Krzeszewski), nicknamed Justin Case, has fairly standard third-grade worries (former best friends, rope climbing in gym) and pretty typical joys (current best friends, making it to the top of the rope). He expresses all of these in diary form throughout a school year, and his traditional nuclear family, which celebrates both Jewish and Christian holidays, supports him during all of the multiplication tables, violin lessons, soccer games, and dog messes. Vail’s previous works have primarily been for either younger (Sometimes I’m Bombaloo, 2002) or older (Lucky, 2008) audiences, and here, the voice focused on this in-between age wavers a bit. In addition, the line drawings add humor, but are small and few and far between. Some readers may feel that Justin lacks the inherent charm of other peers, such as Lenore Look’s Alvin Ho or Katy Kelly’s Melonhead, and they may find that Justin’s middle-class suburban life lacks drama. Others, though, will find comfort in Justin’s normalcy and in seeing that it’s OK to still love your stuffed animals, even when you’re a “fourth-grader-to-be.” Grades 3-5. --Andrew Medlar

The Best Book I ever read!!!

JUSTIN CASE is absolutely hilarious but also meaningful. Like Justin, I am a kid who worries, a lot not a little. So some of Justin's thoughts were like - that is SO me! But not all. For instance I am not scared of dogs and Justin is. I was reading and reading, and I kept being like, okay, just one more bit and that's it! But then I kept going. And I am not somebody who does that, normally. But I just could not stop! I loved the characters of his grandparents named Gingy and Poopsie and also his friends/not-friends like the runny-aroundy boys! They added so much humor but also deepness. I loved when Justin had good days but I was always like, uh-oh -- what's coming next? I think this is an excellent book for third graders, of course, but also for fourth and fifth graders, because we have already been through the things Justin is going through so we can be more like, oh, no, Justin! Don't do that! Okay that is all I am writing because now I am going to read some of my favorite parts again! I give this book 5 Superstars -- so, Justin, you are the Superstar Champion!!!

The Better Diary of a WImpy Kid

Justin Case is a hilariously funny book similar to that of Diary of a Wimpy Kid distinguished by the friendliness and level of mean humor. Diary of a Wimpy Kid has a large amount of mean humor, while Justin Case doesn't. Therefore, Justin Case is a much better book and is the ideal book for those who tend to worry, those needing a good book to read, and anyone else with the ability to read.

A Great Book for Young Worriers (and their parents!)

Do you have a child who worries? I do. He's been worrying since he was two. I worry that his worrying will keep him from having fun, playing with other kids, and trying out for the swim team.

I think it's contagious.

I wish I had Rachel Vail's adorable book (Justin Case: School, Drool and other Daily Disasters), when my now-nearly-twelve worrier was entering third grade, as Justin does. Through a series of hilarious journal entries, we live the life of an eight year old worrier as he fends off rebellious stuffed animals, schemes to get a dog (even though he's terrified of them), and finds a way to survive the year without his best friend in his class. Along the way, he discovers that bravery means not letting your fears get in the way.

Content: gentle, fun book about life in third grade

It is a secret I will keep as long as I live.

My twelve year old gamely read this book, but it really was a bit young for him. The reading level is an impressive 5.2 (for a book about third graders), so I think it is a great find for young advanced readers. With its light-hearted innocence and story of triumph over fears large and small, I heartily recommend Justin Case for worriers (and their parents) ages 8+, or even younger - because worrying has no age limit.

This story feels kinda rushed and like things are not fully explored or explained. I felt that things moved a little too quickly and just felt completely unrealistic to me. The story didn't flow very smoothly and moved too fast from one thing to another which made it hard to fully engage. I wasn't really able to connect to the characters because of it. The book started off fairly well but it just started moving too quickly without enough information. I think I just needed more detail and for the story to be fleshed out.

First book for me by this author. I was impressed. Shifter storyline that was fast-paced, intriguing and hot. Vance is an alpha werewolf shifter that recognizes that Elissa is his mate. Only she's human and doesn't know about shifters. Loved their chemistry and characters. Loved the book and can't wait to read more by this author.

I teach the concept of scenario planning to students in a strategy class, but I never found a book that explained it clearly and easily.
Now I have: this book has a completely practical focus and walks you through the process step by step. It's also a beautifully designed book.
I will test it out with my class in the upcoming semester.

A great book for university courses as well.

This is a great book; clear, intelligent and practical. I chose this book for an upper level Strategic Planning course. Students made great use of the material. I looked at a number of options for a text covering the scenario planning part of the course. No other book came close.

What is particularly helpful is the combination of conceptual, design and practical thought shown in the book's development. Scenario planning is often presented in ways that are either impenetrable or trivial. Theory and practice are well integrated here and there is nothing misplaced in that integration.

I recommend this book without hesitation.

A Proven Methodical Approach to Envision Plausible Futures

Woody Wade, an accomplished strategy consultant, has written a thorough overview of the scenario planning process. This book should be particularly beneficial to those with a limited knowledge of scenarios who need a basic understanding in order to get started.

Scenario Planning is organized into five chapters, with chapters 2 (how to develop a scenario), 3 (case studies), and 4 (Black Swans) being the most instructive. In discussing how to develop a scenario, Wade presents a 10-step process that begins with framing the strategic challenge, and concludes with how to monitor and write your completed scenario. The successful completion of steps 4 (defining either / or uncertainties) and 5 (generating scenarios) are critical to developing viable scenarios. As such, I was somewhat disappointed in that I felt Wade could have devoted a bit more space to explaining these concepts in more detail.

The chapter devoted to case studies is very beneficial as it brings to life the "how to" concepts presented previously. This section introduces the idea of using well-written and imaginative vignettes to convey how scenarios might play out. I particularly enjoyed reading the newspaper industry case study and the accompanying presentation of four very different and plausible futures.

As Wade cautions throughout the book, scenarios do not equal predictions. Rather, well-developed scenarios are a must have tool to help organizations develop potential strategic choices and direction. Indeed, I think a well thought out strategy can only evolve from the potential choices presented by developing multiple scenarios.

Scenario Planning is well written, practical, and entertaining to read. It's recommended for someone who wants to develop a basic understanding of the various considerations and steps involved in developing an informed look at possible and plausible futures.

Michael Sharpe is a professional genealogist, writer and lecturer who specializes in the local and family history of Birmingham and the wider West Midlands. He is a member of the Society of Genealogists, the Birmingham & Midland Society for Genealogy and Heraldry, and several other family and local history societies. He is the author of Family Matters: A History of Genealogy. Michael was born in Birmingham and has traced his roots there back to 1750, long before the influxes of the industrial revolution, making him a true ‘Brummie’.

Grade 5-8-Eleven-year-old Forrest is the son of the Ravenmaster in the Tower of London. Historically, this position, which fell to one of the Tower guards, was to care for the ravens that live within the walls of the fortress as a token of luck to keep it from falling to its enemies. Forrest has grown up in the Tower and has his own pet raven, Tuck. He feels confined and sheltered from the outside world. Bullies make fun of him. When dangerous Scottish rebels are captured and imprisoned, he hopes to show his bravery. His responsibility, however, turns out to be to take food to the young daughter of one of the rebels. As he learns more about Maddy, he comes to admire and respect her, and realizes that if he does not help her escape, she will be executed. To do so, though, he will have to go against all he has been taught. The story has its share of suspense, excitement, and interesting characters. Set in 1735, it does not flinch from describing the brutality of the time, including public hangings, which Forrest's mother loves to attend. While some of the plot elements may seem unrealistic and the ending too pat, the story is certainly satisfying. Its message of judging people on their own merits and not on the basis of stereotypes comes across strongly. An author's note, a history of the Tower of London, and a glossary of unfamiliar English and Scottish words are appended.

The Ravenmasters Secret

The Ravenmasters Secret is a great story for everyone of all ages. The Ravenmasters Secret gets you wondering what you would do if you were in the same shoes as the main character. The main Character is Forrest who he and his family live in the tower of London, he is the Ravenmasters son. He takes care of ravens and also feeds the prisoner which he is in charge of, forrest has many differnet chores around the fortress. In the story he gets caught into a deep secret which he and is friend, the rat catcher, Ned risk their lives to save a scottish rebels daughter who is a prisoner,named Madeline, she is the same age as Forrest and Ned.

Forrest gets into many tough situations which I would not have the courage to risk my life for. In the book you learn about the different lifestyles and theculture of England around 1735.

The Ravenmasters secret is based on a true story, but not real characters, it is based on several attempts of the escape of the Tower of London. The Ravenmasters Secret is a wonderful book which once you start you can't stop until you find out the conclusion to see how the plan to escape turns out.

Another Woodruff Winner

I'm a huge fan of Elvira Woodruff's. I first started reading her books when my kids did, now that they're grown I keep reading them. In fact, I buy them and save them for my (fingers crossed) grandchildren. This one is my favorite along with the Christmas Doll. She is such an amazing writer, right up there with E.B. White and CHARLES DICKENS!
But now for the Ravenmaster. I don't know how she does it, but from page 1 I am right there in the tower of London with Forrest and Rat and the secret prisoner. I care from the very beginning what happens to each of them, and I also care for all the other characters in the book, 'cept one, but I'll let you read it so you can discover the Fagan.... Anyway, I highly recommend this book for any age child, even one in her fifties like me! I will be very suprised if this book does not become a classic. Forrest, Maddie and Rat

In 1735 a boy named Forrest Harper lives in the Tower of London. His dad is the Ravenmaster and someday Forrest hopes to be the Ravenmaster. One day the town is going to have a hanging, so his family goes. At the hanging, some mean boys start teasing him and make him watch the hanging. He wants to prove that he's not a little boy because he's small, so he tells them that he is going to have a tough Scottish prisoner in his part of the Tower. But it turns out that his prisoner is young rebel named Maddie. He befriends Maddie but she is going to have to have her head chopped off! Meanwhile, his friend Rat is an indentured apprentice to a rat catcher. The rat catcher loses a bet with a nasty chimney sweep who makes kids work until they die. Because of the bet, Rat now has to work for the chimney sweep. How can Forrest help his friends escape their terrible fates?

"Dree yer ain weird" means "face your destiny" in Scottish. I think that Elvira Woodruff means that as a moral because Forrest Harper has to find out his destiny. The Ravenmaster's Secret is suspenseful because you want to know what happens to Forrest and his friends. If their plan doesn't work out perfectly then Rat, Maddie and Forrest will die. Forrest will die because he is a traitor to England. It is interesting reading a book set so long ago and in a different country with a different community. Some people do not like death, so if you're one of those people this may not be the best choice. I think it's a good book even though it has killing. That's the way things were back then.
