In Hannibal Lecter and Philosophy, 16 philosophers come at Hannibal the way he comes at his victims from unexpected angles and with plenty of surprises.
What does the relationship between Hannibal and those who know him particularly FBI investigator Will Graham tell us about the nature of friendship? Does Hannibal confer benefits on society by eliminating people who don’t live up to his high aesthetic standards? Can upsetting experiences in early childhood turn you into a serial killer? Why are we enthralled by someone who exercises god-like control over situations and people? Does it make any difference morally that a killer eats his victims? Can a murder be a work of art?
Several chapters look at the mind of this proud and accomplished killer, psychiatrist, and gourmet cook. Is he a sociopath or a psychopath, or are these the same? Is he lacking in empathy? Does his moral blindness give him compensating abilities, the way literally blind people gain heightened senses? Does it harm us that we are drawn into Hannibal’s world by identifying with him?

Wanted to like it more than I did
By Stephanie
This started out very promising, and I was excited to read on. Unfortunately, less than half way through, I realized I was reading the same things over and over (and over!) as each chapter incessantly repeated what was already written in other pages. Same quotes, same idea, same statements. Same outcome. Several chapters also seemed like they were just full outlines of the book/film/episode, with laborious details about what anyone who's read/watched anything Hannibal-related would know are blatantly obvious. It became extremely boring to read, but I hate leaving a book unfinished. I did enjoy the first 3 chapters but after that, it's all just restatement.

Exquisite and stimulating
By DBIAT
Exquisite and stimulating, I found nearly all of these essays worthy of consideration. Pay special heed, though, to McClelland's double offering and, particularly, Hassert's work. Those three, alone, were worth the price of admission.

Fascinating! I am a Psychology student and this is an interesting dive into a well-known fictional character with a good lens of philosophy and psychology. If you are a fan of the movies, show and books this is a good addition to the fandom.
