The Broken Sword is almost too fast-paced, packed with agonizing cliffhangers as peril presses young Arthur, Beatrice, and Hal (Galahad, now a retired FBI agent) on all sides, though the lengthy recapitulations of Arthur's and Taliesin's previous lives detract from the real story in the 20th century. But The Broken Sword has a complete-feeling ending that puts Arthur, his recovered knights, Beatrice, and Merlin happily in place for future victories.

This complex sequel to The Forever King (Tor, 1992) provides an unusual, creative blending of elements of reincarnation, witchcraft, magic, and Christianity without really being about any one of them. In it, King Arthur of Camelot and Merlin, reincarnated as a 20th-century teenager and an old man, rescue the Holy Grail from evil villains. Hal, the retired FBI agent of the first novel is also of assistance, as are the knights of the Round Table. An action-packed opening scene grabs readers' attention. However, this pace is not evenly maintained throughout. Although the difficult vocabulary can usually be understood in context, and the shifts in time back to the original Arthurian histories are usually clear, this novel will be most appreciated by more advanced readers. The increased amount of violence also necessitates a greater maturity level. Blind Beatrice can see only when she holds the Holy Grail she found in a market in Marrakesh. She becomes Arthur's companion, and the two return to America with the grail, pursued by an evil sorcerer. Arthur must choose whether to break Excalibur to protect Beatrice or fail in his attempt to restore the Round Table. This rollicking good contemporary fantasy adventure belongs in all fantasy collections.

A GREAT NOVEL!!

Murphy and Cochran have done themselves well with this novel. Although I liked The Forever King better, this novel also intrigued me.
First of all, let me list the few faults this novel had compared to the first one: it was a lot darker than the first novel, it had too much on the history of the characters, and it didn't even develop the evil character, Aubrey Katsuleris (Thanatos). Sure, he was developed in some way, but Cochran and Murphy could have taken out about 15 of the 70 or so historical pages involving Arthur and Taliesin, and put Katsuleris into it.
Next, the good things: it displayed Merlin's past, which is good in some ways, we got to see the knights come together again, the bad guy was a lot better in this one, and it was just so great! Worth reading, although I advise you all to read The Forever King before this one.

Incredible. One of the best re-tells of the Arthurian myth.

In "The Forever King" Cochran and Murphy created one of the most original re-interpretations of the Arthur legend. In "The Broken Sword" they continue the story of Arthur, Galahad, and Merlin and give a unique view of the less described elements of the legend - How did Merlin become a wizard? Why did no other Druid help Arthur? And most important of all, Where did the magic go? I fervently hope that the series is continued, as I would love to see how Arthur reclaims his throne.

A bit disappointing

After reading the truly wonderful "The Forever King", I could barely wait to delve into this sequel. After finishing the novel, I must admit that I felt some disappointment. The villian of the story is so similar to the villian in "The Forever King" that they might as well be clones. Arthur's Aunt Emily is barely in the story at all. Her brief appearance seems to hint at another sequel. A new character, Beatrice, is introduced. She spends most of the story in a hospital while Arthur stays at her bedside. The Knights of the Round Table are released from Camelot and join Hal on a quest to protect Arthur. The Knights are hopelessly outdated, and while this provides some great comic relief at first, the endless drinking and bar-wrecking become mind numbing.
The story once again revolves around a villian who is out to get the grail at any cost. I do hope that if Cochran & Murphy write another sequel, it will have a totally different plot and villian. I did like the book enough that I will buy the sequel if or when it is published, and I'll hope that it is as captivating as "The Forever King."

Pretty sure this is the book that I’ve been waiting for.

Most everything in life is about persuasion, right? Asking teen leaders to re-engage. Gathering volunteers. Raising support. Talking an alcoholic off the bridge. Helping schools see the importance of allowing a Drug-Free youth program into the schools. Keeping hold of my granddaughter’s heart. Moving a doctor’s appointment to meet my father’s today’s emergency. Comforting someone whose brother passed away earlier this morning. Keeping my work clients happy while helping them be successful. Persuading myself to chill, take a nap, or at least a reading break. Ahhh... yes, and now with another gret book from Jason Frenn. Thanks Jason!

You really need to read this...

I wasn't sure if this book was for me at first, but I am glad that I gave it a chance. Jason Frenn is one of the very best persuasive leaders out there. He always ends up inspiring me...persuading me to do what it takes to be a better person and to live -- really live, not just survive life. I am not a CEO of anything. I am not in sales, and I am not a leader of much. However, because I have become an overcomer of some very difficult obstacles that held me back most of my life, I now have this amazing desire to help others by showing them how they too can have an incredible transformation in their own life. It took faith, hard work, difficult decisions, and perseverance for me to change and I find that most people do not want to do the hard things that I have done to overcome. That's where I need help in learning to become a highly persuasive leader. I am grateful for the insights I have learned from this book. So if you are in similar situation like me and you are thinking this book isn't for you, think again and give it a chance. You will be glad you did.

so so good

Oh my gosh this was so good. It picks up a couple of months after the last one ended, and shows the pitfalls that come with a person recently released from jail. Trevor is still so amazing to Sylvia. I am always a fan of this author and this one is right up there with what I would expect from her. This has the understanding of the hardships people go through when getting out of prison it also has a beautiful love story. I am always one to recommend this author and I will do it again in a heart beat. The only thing I have to say and maybe it is because I know people who have worked with people like this is what he goes through when he comes out of prison on the work front is only skimmed over the heartache that is felt is there but not to the depth that most feel when they get out. That being said is only one blip on the story that is so good that you must all read it.

Sass presents an unorthodox view of the workings of the schizophrenic mind in his comparison of Daniel Schreber and Ludwig Wittgenstein. He explores schizophrenia not as a disease to be treated, but rather as an alternate view of reality whose credibility cannot be fully discounted. This blatantly contradicts traditional conceptions of the essence of this disorder. Sass virtually ignores the biomedical aspects of schizophrenia, opting for a more philosophical interpretation of the symptomatic delusions. He makes a unique correlation between solipsism's self-focused tendencies and the mental isolation of the schizophrenic. Sass employs several metaphysical analogies to illustrate the paradoxical nature of schizophrenia. Many of Wittgenstein's theories on literal tautologies and their place in schizophrenic thought can be difficult to grasp but are worth the extra words used to explain them. The nature of subjective and objective realities is analyzed in relation to the standards by which we judge consensual reality. The organization of the book is conducive to a clear understanding of the inherently complicated paradoxes that are central to Sass' argument. Endnotes enhance the points presented by providing more detail, context, and additional support. Sass presents a detailed glimpse into the mental turmoil of the schizophrenic mind through the lens of his own unconventional stance.

another view into the asylum

First, I must warn I am biased, I am third generation Wittgensteinian logician. Nuff said on that.

This book is not for most, few like or appreciate scholarly dissertations of this quality. If you do then this is a model on how to write one. It is not appropriate to engage on this site with opinions, or counter arguments, etc. as to whether what Prof. Sass presents is right or wrong. That is up to you to read and participate in. It is not fair to respond to a dissertation with an opinion, too much effort was invested in the former.

The subject or premise is very interesting. I am sure it has caused many a heated argument within the field of psychiatry. It seems to me an invitation to many to travel down a new road further to see what can be found. I am sure that is the Professor's main goal.

But to a philosopher, Sass' application of Wittgenstein is appreciated. The man's life and works beg for such applications in a wide field of study and human behaviour.

I loved the book and will probably reread it numerous times. I think the next time through, I will substitute a society such as ours presently, a supra-consciousness, as the schizophrenic patient, not Schreber, and see how that fits and plays out throughout the text. I think that has far reaching interest and consequences for us all, perhaps. When a patient is subjected to the dreaded reality test is there degrees of insanity, or is it just pass/fail? What would a test be like for a society? Perhaps these are matters for readers to find on their own on the road Dr. Sass openned for us.

Taking delusions seriously

Sass's view of Schizophrenia as an illness that is capable of being characterised as an excess of rationality misses what is the central feature of delusions - their fixity. He does so through his own belief that schizophrenics do not really hold to their delusions. There may be of course inconsistencies in action - between delusions of grandeur and say leading an ordinary life. However the use of Wittgensteins criticism of sense data as induced through a static staring, introduces an "as if" quality to delusions and moreover a voluntarist aspect or interpretation. So someone who thinks that his wife is the devil's agent and murders his wife under this delusion, is in some sense choosing this interpretation. This seems, at least wrong and dangerous. Interpretation engenders communication not dismissal. Sass does not offer any systematic interpretation only appeals to excesses of rationality and illustrative interpretations in Schreiber of the solipsistic viewpoint. This is but a starting point. Finally, invoking a refusal to enter the everyday as an aspect of the solipsistic,(a constant description and appeal in his book) reinvokes a meaningless imperative - be more involved in the world and your delusions will cease to be of relevance. But this suggests that the schizophrenic is somehow fixed in their focus. That is firstly to reintroduce the fixity notion and secondly to ignore the content of delusion (anything can become its focus) and possible structures of translation rather than interpretation (Jean Laplanche). Sass's book is fascinating in its diversity, but for those who have to work with people with acute psychoses not much use and errs on the dangerous. People do act on their delusions.

The "Space Cat" series is my most favorite reading from my Elementary school years!!! I, too, renewed as often as permitted, read them to my cousins, and whoever else would listen. As an adult, I've read them to my children, and have been searching for a way to have them as part of our family library. This is great!!!

An Adventure for the Wee Ones

Space Cat follows the adventures of Flyball, an adventurous cat who finds himself on a military base harboring a moon-going rocket. After getting on board the test flight of the rocket and handling himself well, the cat is outfitted with a pressure suit and is taken along for a full-out trip to the moon. On the moon Flyball finds a cave full of living things that are very different from earth-bound life. His human friend, an astronaut, is knocked out by a piece of falling debris, and it's up to Space Cat to save his life by using his head (and his paws) in a clever way. Then it's back to Earth, to the attention of the media and the adoration of his human friends!

This slim little book reads fast and gives a good adventure for adults as well as children. If you read it as a kid and want to go back and reread it as an adult, this book will reward you with a good read and solid fun. Flyball acts like a cat (albeit a smart cat) throughout the book, viewing the humans on the base as his slaves and feeling like he in general runs things. But when the chips are down he comes through for his owner and saves the moon mission. This book seems especially appropriate for young children who adore cats, as its simple language and straightforward storytelling are aimed straight at them and can't help but delight.

Sherri Gragg fell in love with stories as a child, discovering that she could travel to any place and any moment in time between the covers of a book. Today as a writer she takes her readers with her on the journey. Her first book, Arms Open Wide: A Call to Linger in the Savior’s Presence, utilizes cultural background and archeology to immerse the reader in some of the most riveting moments of the Gospels. Sherri is a nationally published freelance writer and award winner in the 2012 Writer’s Digest Competition and lives with her husband and five children in Franklin, Tennessee.

More than a devotional

This does have the appearance of a devotional with the Biblical reading, the "devotional" text, and a prayer.

But hold on a minute!!! The text in each chapter is more like a short story than it is a devotional. It's a revision of the Biblicalreading preceding the text, but revision doesn't sound right either because the text is flawlessly true to the scripture.

What Sherri Gragg does here is to present the incident from the life and ministry of Jesus from the viewpoint of one of the people in the incident such as the boy who brought a lunch that fed a multitude, or the woman accused of adultery. There are more than 30 of these "short stories" that wonderfully bring the incident into full life related by Biblical characters. Some are related from the viewpoint of a disciple as in the case of the tax collector Matthew's being called as a disciple. The stories are taken from the full New Testament including the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, and the Great Commission.

This is a great book for every Christian, be ye new to the faith or a long time believer. It's also a great gift and one that I especially urge giving to anyone who is seriously contemplating becoming a Christian. Of all the Christian books I have read, this is one of the most powerful ones and I honestly urge you to get hold of a copy.

Arms Open Wide

Loved, loved, LOVE this book! This is a daily devotional of about a month, with scripture readings and Bible verses. Because I will start the conversion to Catholicism in the fall, I really appreciated that there were some references to the Catholic Bible as well. This was an uplifting, heartfelt devotional. A keeper.
