Great find

Hi Amazoners!

I played for 7 years like many onceler instrumentalists. From 6th grade until the end of the high school years. But of course, life happened and I stopped. Playing my flute was something I enjoyed, so I picked it up again as a hobby seriously almost 2 years ago. I have had a few performances at church but I quickly bored with some pieces and wanted more intermediate to advanced pieces. But in order to get my fingers and eyes ready for the technical aspects, i needed more practice. So, I ordered the elementary, intermediate, and advanced books at the same time.

I was excited to see my books arrive so quickly since now live outside the U.S. So for fun, I picked up the intermediate and advanced books first to to see if I could tackle it. But I quickly realized I needed a good review. So now, I am moving through the elementary level book. I am moving through it fast, but with better accuracy, and tone quality. I'm married, in my 30's, I work, and have 2 elementary aged children. These Rubank books are a good challenge for my schedule. (just what i wanted! :)The book is thick and well bounded with plenty of opportunities for growth. This was a wonderful find for the price! You won't regret it.

Really good instructional book

I started flute as an older adult as I near retirement. I figured it would help my cognitive function and be a great hobby. My teacher recommended these books (vol. 1 and 2)and have served as the foundation of my study. I love using this book because it covers everything in a systematic way: keys, fingerings, scales, solos, and duets. Each section of study uses the same key so there is thorough grounding in each key before one moves on. I enjoy the duets especially and find the exercises tuneful enough to be like music. This is not the only book I use so I have enough variety to keep from being bored.

My daughter's teacher, who is highly regarded, recommended this book for her studies. My daughter has had private lessons since grade 5 (she is now in grade 9) and plays well, certainly very well for a student, so I do think this is an advanced book.

This includes the first six books in the Caedmon Wolves: Wolf's Haven, Wolf's Promise, Wolf's Touch, Wolf's Desire, Wolf's Strength, and Wolf's Honor. All of the book are about the Caedmon Pack and their struggle to achieve peace with each other, a rival pack, and outside forces. Separately, each story follows a different wolf's individual battle through these difficult times and their search for their fated mate.

I enjoyed every book and the overarching story line throughout the six books. Wolf's Honor felt shorter and the ending left a bit wanting.

Riveting series of Caedman wolves culture and characters.

Awesome Caedman wolves culture consist of shifters, humans that are wolves but can't shift, and humans in the outside world. Each book is about several main characters intertwined with characters and scenes relating to the same events (over a period of time). Each book is a different grouping of characters and storyline. It is fascinating how the various stories intertwine and more stories are coming. Yay! These authors put out a terrific books with vivid characters and plots that kept me up many nights just to finish a book!

Wolves in a different kind of book setting - interested?

This is an amazing set. For one, each book tells a different couple/members meetings and love story. As you get into the books even further everyone kind of comes together. It's awesome. I have never read a set like this. I have read series books (which I love and thought that this is what that was). However, I don't want to tell any spoilers, but if you are like me in reading books with a passion you will fall in love with all of the characters. I definitely think if the supernatural books are your kind of thing - this is the book for you.

About the Author
Abraham Eraly is the author of four acclaimed volumes on premodern Indian history--- The Last Spring: The Lives and Times of the Great Mughals (later published in two volumes, as Emperors of the Peacock Throne and The Mughal World), Gem in the Lotus: The Seeding of Indian Civilisation, The First Spring: The Golden Age of India and The Age of Wrath: A History of the Delhi Sultanate. He was born in Kerala and educated there and in Chennai. He has taught Indian history in colleges in India and the United States, and was the editor of a current affairs magazine for several years.

A case of editorial negligence

I have enjoyed Eraly's past publications about the Mughals and have long been intrigued by the five dynasties of the Delhi Sultanate based on previous reading in Wolsley Haig and Majumdar's monumental history of India. So I was delighted that he had taken on this complex and confusing period in his latest work of popular history. I was very eager to obtain a copy. To his credit, the book did hold my attention throughout and I was able to follow the complex cast of characters with very little confusion. I give him high marks for his narrative abilities. Unfortunately, I thought his analytical comments were frequently less than insightful and seemed to reflect the antiquated notions of an earlier generation of historians -- particularly in his assessments of tyrannical behavior, the sexual proclivities of certain sultans (which apparently sapped their potency as political figures -- an apparent holdover from Victorian prudery and prurient Orientalist fascination) and the remarkably juvenile explanation for the Islamic subjugation of India (in part, enervating climatic effects on the Hindus!). Also, his editors have failed him with this volume. It is cheaply produced on poor quality paper with nothing in the way of illustration (no photographs, genealogical charts or maps). Such things are very necessary to the novice in this period and this book is clearly pitched to that audience. Probably, the editors had no faith in its marketability and wanted to save on production costs. But worst of all, there are many mechanical errors in the text along with annoying misuse of words. There is a large-scale repetition of text from the intro in a later part of the book. Any author will have such errors and oversights in an initial manuscript but a good editor can be counted on to catch most of them. Not in this case. I feel very badly for Mr. Eraly. This book's overall failure is probably not his fault. I have enjoyed reading this book, but for me, it is not a "keeper."

Signficant, but needs rewrite

A full-length treatment of the history of the Delhi Sultanate (over 400 pages) is a welcome addition to the general history of India. The author's style is fresh and engaging and is eminently readable. These are big points in its favor, and one would like to recommend it. Unfortunately, the text is poorly structured and full of repetitions. A substantial rewrite would significantly improve it. Cutting out the redundancies would probably reduce the word count by one quarter, which would be a major boon. Tightening and deepening the arguments would enhance the quality of the work.

This book consists of two major sections. Section I (Part II - VI) is a chronicle of the of "India's medieval history," but in fact from before the Delhi Sultanate at the time of Gazni to the Moghuls (at times, the author goes beyond the original scope of recording the Sultanate, and seems intent on making the book a history of India altogether; his forays are however half-hearted). It is sultans and battles (plus their ghoulish tortures) all the way. Some of these rulers were good, others appalling - but one wonders why one is sheepishly to follow them and their armies as they reduce rebellions, conquer kingdoms, slaughter infidels, or go about the raiding business with abandon.

Part II is far more interesting: it is a political, cultural, economic (albeit in limited way) and socio-religious history of the age. Had Part II been Part I, one would have better understood the dynamics between the people of Hindustan and their conquerors. I'd urge the prospective reader to start with Part II, and skim over Part I until the interest weakens.

The author paints with broad brush strokes the image of a rigorist Islam and an accommodationist Hinduism. The image of the two civilizations being "oil and water" (and never mixing) recurs. First of all, the statement should be qualified: as the author himself argues, mystical religious movements on both sides did have commonalities (see e.g. his treatment of Kabir on pg. 411 ff.), albeit at the popular rather than the elite level. History no longer is religious elite history. Secondly, Hinduism's accommodationism was limited by the twin pillars of metempsychosis and caste. If Islam was politics of violence, Hinduisms' was politics of disgust. Both were equally absolutist, though by different means, and with different outcomes. So the analysis remains somewhat superficial.

The categorizing in terms of diads and triads, and juxtaposition of opposites, sometimes takes the author to make statements that are unsupported, facile, or contradictory. "Windshield wiper history" of recurrent opposites makes good reading and is easily remembered, but it might hide complexities and path-dependent outcomes. There is much interesting information in this book, but one should pick through the stack with great caution.

Interesting book but with a heavy dose of the author's prejudice which colors the narrative. Highly repetitive. Needs major editing. Was looking to read a history of that period. Instead read an opinion. Not particularly useful. Or enjoyable.

I have several editions of this history book. Although no deep, dark rituals are revealed, it is useful how A Phi A, from its humble beginnings became the fraternal institution it is today.

4th edition is very good, readable, ideal for undergrads

There is no perfect conservaton biology textbook, but this one is probably the best all-around choice for a general introduction to the field. I've just switched to this textbook for my undergraduate Conservation Biology class. I don't know what the 3rd edition was like, but the 2006 4th edition seems very nicely organized and well-written. I've tried 2 other texts for this course and found Hunter & Gibbs to be too oversimplified, while Groom et al. is too advanced for most undergraduates. Groom et al. is a fantastic reference for a professional or grad student, but is just too overwhelming for your average sophomore bio major. Anyway, Primack's 4th edition hits the middle ground exactly right - a lot of good detail, all the key vocabulary, decent coverage of recent developments in the field, clearly written, nice figures, but not too overwhelming. It's organized in 6 major sections: (1) biodiversity (what & where it is), (2) why we should care, (3) why it's vanishing, (4) population biology (how to keep a small pop'n going), (5) practical solutions (reserve design, restoration ecology etc.), and (6) human society. I plan to supplement it with outside readings & a case-study popular book or two, probably Kurlansky's "Cod" for a look at how human history, culture & economics can combine to gradually drive a species under, and Bodsworth's "Last of the Curlews" (the edition with the beautiful illustrations by T.M.Shortt) just for emotional impact and sheer beauty.

Thought-provoking, but muddled

This was the primary textbook for a graduate conservation biology course I had. I found the book to be an enjoyable read and thought-provoking. However, the book's organization was at time muddled. A decent introduction to the field of conservation biology, but as a textbook, it falls short.

Surprisingly still modern after many (7+) decades

This textbook is hardly to be surpassed by any other treatment of the subject. Originally written in 1937-1939, the treatment provides a bridge between the classics (Maxwell, Boltzmann, Gibbs) and the then new world of quantum mechanics.

What really impresses me is its modernity in approaching the subject from the full quantum point of view, using quantum statistics and density matrices from the outset. This is unifying and economic at the same time. Moreover, time and again I have found that many "modern" concerns in equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, like, for instance, the issue about the equilibration of quantum many-particle systems, echoes opinions and insights already stated in this textbook. Everytime I pick my copy to take a glance I realize how puny such acclaimed books like L. Reichl's or the new M. Kardar's ones are (despite their many merits).

There may be more gentle introductions to statistical mechanics out there (choose one), but this book makes an ideal 2nd. reading. This is the book that, together with S.-K. Ma's and K. Huang's books on the same subject, will make you a pro.

Very dense

This book covers a lot of material in a fairly straightforward order - but it's very dense and not a lot of helpful examples. Good for reference, but Pathria is probably better if you're going through grad level stat mech for the first time.

Incomplete, incorrect, and superficial introduction to the subject

The book contains very basic, egregious mistakes. For example, in one place the author writes "Homonyms are words that sound alike. For instance, the words cat, bat, sat and fat sound alike." No! Homonyms are, in short, words that are pronounced exactly the same but have different meanings. Those words listed as examples may rhyme, and those words may sound confusing to speech-recognition systems, but those words are most definitely not homonyms!

So perhaps this glaring mistake can be ignored because this is a book about neural networks and not one about grammar? Perhaps... but if the author can't be bothered to properly research the definitions of basic terminology, would you trust him to properly research more advanced concepts?

If you said "no," you are probably right. As just one example, later in the book the author goes on to claim "Hopfield networks are capable of solving mathematical problems deemed impossible for a computer to solve, like the travelling salesman problem." No! First of all, the travelling salesman problem is an example of an NP-hard problem, which means that it takes a long, long time for computers to solve problems like these, not that it is impossible to do so. Second of all, anything possible with Hopfield networks is of course possible on computers, since Hopfield networks run on computers. The author probably meant "rule-based systems" instead of "computers," but still, sloppy use of language. Finally, that sentence is outright incorrect, because if Hopfield networks are indeed able to offer optimal solutions to the travelling salesman problem in less than exponential time, then P = NP would effectively be proved, and thus far that famous problem is still unsolved. Instead, Hopfield networks are merely capable of offering solutions that are pretty darn good, but not the best. Big difference. Look at how careless the author simply had to be in order to make such ludicrous mistakes in a statement like that. Do you really think you can trust this guy on anything he says?

Not only is the book riddled with mistakes, both big and small, but it hardly comes close to the claim that it is a "comprehensive introduction" to neural networks. The book has only talked about feed-forward networks, and showed examples only of artificial neurons modeled with step functions. Nothing at all about slightly more realistic neuron models like leaky fire-and-integrate, which can be gleaned from just a cursory reading of Wikipedia. Nor was anything mentioned about recurrent neural networks. If I didn't already know they existed before reading this book, I would have no idea to even explore them if I wanted to do further reading on my own.

In short, avoid this book. If you know anything about neural networks, this book won't really teach you anything more than spending a few minutes browsing through some Wikipedia articles on the topic. If you don't know much about neural networks or computer science in general, stay away because this book will corrupt your understanding of it.

Disappointing

I have to agree with the reviewer Bob Jones. I also have to confess, I purchased the book even after reading his one-star review. I am an electronics hobbyist and I was intrigued at the prospect of building a neural network from hardware components rather than programming one. If that is your desire, this book will disappoint. The author demonstrates an op amp servo controller and calls it a neuron. It has no feedback loop to enable training. You simply manually adjust the variable resistors to produce the desired output. Other projects in the book are just simple hardware kits like you might buy at Radio Shack. For one of the projects the author even admits that he does not know if the chip uses a hardware implemented neural network or not. He says that, from the description of the chip, "it sounds neural to me"! Really??? His programming examples are in QBasic - not a programming language you probably use, or want to learn to use. Bottom line, the book is superficial, riddled with errors, and unsatisfying from either a software or hardware point of view.

Misspellings, missing words,poor grammar, and poor descriptions riddle this book, only 166 pages. Obvious self promotion and too much focus on hardware projects rather than algorithms inflate this "book". The relevant content could be done in a 10-page paper.
