This book is excellent

Some reviewers cited very weak reasons for disliking this book. I believe that they missed the point of the book.
This book will be most useful to skilled C++ programmers who wish to implement portable multi-threaded code. I do not believe novice programmers will benefit from this book because the subject is advanced.
This book provides you with an object-oriented, cross-platform, multi-threading library for Unix and Win32. Walmsley effectively abstracts away the details of Unix pthreads and Windows threads so that you can concentrate purely on multi-threading concepts. A cross-platform multi-threading library is a rare treat. On these grounds alone, this book is a must-have.
In teaching the material, he introduces the header files for objects in the order in which he needs to introduce key concepts. His goal is to teach you how to do multi-threading properly, so you have to read everything, and you must cling on to every word. This book is not for people who skim books and want instant gratification.
At the end of each chapter, he provides the Unix and Windows implementations of his classes. From a learning perspective, you can easily skip these sections.
Here are some weaknesses in his book: - The code examples would occasionally have benefitted from better variable naming. In particular, he does not prefix member variables with "m", "_", or "m_", which hurts readability. - The code examples would have been easier to understand if he had used the Standard Template Library. In particular, he used lots of char * and arrays instead of strings and vectors. - He does not provide a CD or link to code samples. Instead, you will have to type them in yourself.

Skimpy coverage, low organization and readability

Somehow this book is too broad yet too narrow at the same time. The author tries to cover multiple platforms at once, but it only makes things less readable. Unfortunately, thread implementations are still rather platform-specific, and learning one implementation doesn't necessarily transfer to another. Java is a better alternative for threaded programming if true multi-platform code is your goal. If not, there are other, platform-specific books on threaded programming that might be more suitable ("Programming with POSIX Threads", "Win32 Multithreaded Programming").
I did not think this book was very readable. I can understand why it would assume a good knowledge of C++, but it felt like it assumed you already had a good understanding of how threads worked, too. For example this sentence: "An important note is that an event contains a kind of built-in memory so that if one thread signals before another starts to wait, then the signal is not lost." I thought I already understood the basic operation and uses of semaphores and events, but "a kind of built-in memory"? That is a non-explanation, and it's on the third page of the book. I also thought there could be more thorough worked out examples included, and again the mix & matching of win32 & unix code, sometimes on the same page....I'm glad I only checked this out from the library and didn't purchase it.

Good Title Bad book

I really looked forward to getting this book, and was very disappointed. There is room for a C++ book on multi threading, but Mr. Wamsley, I think, missed the mark.
I found the format somewhat confusing. There was commentary and source code file text interspersed together. Considering you have to type in the examples this was especially annoying. I always believe that source code should be included on disk or CD.
Although I know it is a lot of work, I believe examples should work. If there are dependencies - state them clearly! Extra compiling help should also be volunteered.
Also the book was expensive. Why a hardcover? I'd rather have a paperback with a CD. Save your money until a more thorough and complete book comes out on C++ multi threading. (hint hint for any budding authors out there).

Poor Introduction but a Good Example of Neoplatonic Philosophy

Plotinus was a 3rd Century c.e. philosopher whose work was an attempt at bringing new life to the ideas of Plato. He would later be described as an early founder of the Neoplatonist philosophic movement. This is a later category used by 19th century historians, but he himself would have only identified himself as a Platonist philosopher an nothing more.

Thus the ideas found within, An Essay on the Beautiful is very much in line with the idea of finding beauty by looking for it's purest essence. This idea was derived from Plato's theory of forms. The most prominent idea put emphasized by Plotinus is that in order to understand beauty you need to search for it's underlying form or essence. He also identifies "pure" beauty with the "pure" good and to understand it you need to be a good or virtuous person otherwise your judgement is not clear and you will not be able to discern what is truly beautiful, because you are not truly good.

The ideas are strait forward and you can see certain "Neoplatonic" ideas showing up in early Christian theology with Saint Augustine being a prime example.

The text was clearly translated, but often times uses an incredibly complex words where much simpler ones would work.

The only downside of this version is the lengthy introduction that tells us absolutely nothing about what's in the text or anything about Plotinus. It is just a bunch of flowery words praising the ideas within without telling you anything about them or the person who wrote it.

This book is not for everyone. It would enjoyed most by students of philosophy, history, or ancient religion. Otherwise if you want to read it go knock yourself out because though it's philosophic in nature, it is short and the ideas are strait forward.

Plotinus or Thomas Taylor?

In all honesty I believe the translator translated this in such away that it fit more with their own wording and thought processes, I may be wrong since I have no other examples to bass this on. However the preface written by the translator has the exact same sense and feel about it, even incorporating the same psychological feel, both the Intro and the actual Essay, are written in the same round about way. It's something I used to do in High School and is I would say intellectually childish, it was a process where really nothing was said at all, but was written in such a fashion as to confuse the reader, the reader thus being confused would think that this must be brilliant because a scholar must be needed to understand this. The real question becomes thus, is the Intro written by a person so caught up in the writings of Plotinus that he has adapted his style and perhaps his very personality from Plotinus, or has the translator twisted the works of Plotinus to be like his very writing style? I can't answer that with out more research, do to the lack of research materials available me...

In all honesty this needs to be read and reread, and I would not recommend this to just anyone, this is a very difficult read, it does go in circles often dropping in unrelated lines, that seem to make no sense what so ever. One could quite frankly develop a migraine reading this.

This book is more than you will ever think...

Leadership & Self Deception is not about someone else's issues and problems that seemingly piss ME/YOU off. The premise is all about ME/YOU deciding that its time to engage people for who they are so I/YOU can "work to make things go right." The issue is not to change someone else's behavior (read that line twice)... but changing MY attitude and behavior regardless of whatever their attitude might be. Wow! But what about them and their attitude?

Too bad - so sad - because Self-Deception is the inability to see that I have a problem. This is why... "No matter what we are doing on the outside, people respond primarily to how we are feeling about them on the inside." That is very enlightening.

The point is that OUR success as a leader at work in the home etc. depends on being free of self betrayal. Only then by our actions and emotions do we invite others to be free of self betrayal.

I highly recommend this book. At a bare minimum - it will probably help lower your blood pressure. What's not to love??

Contrived "business story"

I really wanted to like this book - having done some research on the concept of being "out of the box" when understanding others. Conceptually, the context is great - but I just could not get past the contrived writing as a "story". If you like business stories - go for it! But, if you're like me and would rather fully understand an issue from all angles, and rather read a straight-forward business discussion - then you'll put this book down fast - google the business summaries available, and move on.

Just Bad

Awful. Silly. Trite. Juvenile. It's an unnecessarily long drawn out story with a simple thesis: the Golden Rule. It's a looong parable written for 5th grade level. That's the good. The bad is that along the way, some of it is flat out poor advice from a psychological/sociological (and business!) perspective. Utterly anti-intellectual.
