The book to learn Oracle database design with.

Murach’s Oracle Sql and PL Sql for Developers, Second Edition, continues in the tradition of the Murach publishing company. They have provided with this edition all that a developer may need to learn the application development techniques associated with database development.
For developers new to the database world, the even numbered pages provide textbook like sentence structure to explain a particular issue. For the more experiences developer the odd pages of the text provide an outline of the issue or technique to help you remember what you studied in the past. This combination of writing technique makes this book much more valuable not only for the student but also to the developer who needs the reference material later on. The design and development activities of an application and web developer are only enhanced by the technical knowledge added by surveying this book. I have found it to be an excellent reference for general database design issues.
This book will not turn you into a DBA. For that it would need to add several chapters on security, maintenance plans and replication. What it will do for you is give you an understanding of what makes a relational database tick. When it illustrates normalization you get to see how much more efficient a relational database is over say a “No Sql” database like RavenDb or MongoDb. Enterprise applications need relational databases to support their ever changing data needs.
As an experienced application architect I can say if you are an application or database developer using Oracle as your relational database, this book is a must for you. If there is only one reference book on your shelf, this should be the one.

Must have book for Oracle Developers

Murach’s Oracle SQL and PL/SQL for Developers is the latest book from the famous house of Murach Publishing based in California, USA. The book consist of five section divided into several chapters and two appendixes.
Section 1 provides a basic introduction to relational databases in addition to the use of various Oracle SQL Developer tools. You will learn the steps required to start and stop the database service, usage of SQL*Plus, creation of a database connection, usage of SQL Developer, SQL Reference manual, working of snippets window.
Section 2 of Murach’s Oracle SQL and PL/SQL for Developers examines the steps required to retrieve data from both single and multiple tables, code summary queries and sub queries. You will also learn the steps required to insert, update and delete data in addition to use of data types and functions.
In Page 216, the author has examines the steps required to commit and rollback changes. If you would like to delete rows and make use of a subquery in a DELETE statement you should navigate to Page 228.
The chapters in section 3 provide coverage of database design, creation of tables, indexes and sequences and views. The final chapter of this section examines the management of database security.
In page 388 of Murach’s Oracle SQL and PL/SQL for Developers, the author examines the steps required to grant privileges with the help of SQL statements and description. You will also learn about revoking of privileges.

Good overview and adequate depth.

Murach books are always an excellent resource both for learning and later as an on-demand reference manual. This is due to the format of the book which places the explanation and learning on the left pages and the examples, diagrams and code on the right pages.This book covers the basics of working with SQL database as well as items specific to Oracle SQL.
The first section of the book focuses on an introduction to SQL. It ensures that the reader has a basic understanding of client/server systems including hardware and software. It also introduces the basics of relational databases explaining the basics of tables, unique keys and relationships between tables. It explains the difference between working with data and working with database objects.
The Third section covers database design and implementation. This has always been an area of great interest to me and I was happy to see such a complete explanation of normalization. This is an important concept that I find far too often ignored in many of the systems I encounter. I covers the first, second and third normal forms as well as when and how to denormalize data structures. Another chapter in this section covers another area that is far too often not given enough attention as well; database security. Unlike the previous section on data normalization I found this section to be lacking. While the discussion was sufficient in regards to exposing the reader to the tools and settings available in Oracle it did not map these tools to real world situations or a framework such as NIST 800-53. It also did not discuss client server application design that could assist in meeting security requirements for production applications. While some might argue that this is the domain of the IT security department I contend that database administrators and applications developers must be aware of these requirements and how their design decisions impact the overall security of an application or data.
The other minor issue I have with this book is the fact that it does not cover installation on Linux. This has been an ongoing issue I haev with Murach. I could understand this on Microsoft focused products like .Net, but this has been true when covering open source MySQL, Java, Java Servlets and JSP, HTML5, JQuery, and event Android programming.
In summary I would recommend the book despite its weakness in regards to database security and Linux installation.
