Leonardo Cavalli just reminded me that love is not a game
By Danielle
24 & Divorded: From Tragedy to Triumph... When I was 9 years old, I thought I'd be married by 25, but I'm turning 20 right now and my life is still as messy as my life when I was in High School. But who knows? I could be married after a year or so. This book reminds me of my parents and the couples that I know starting to fall out of their places- and fell out of their places already. Leonardo Cavalli just reminded me that love is not a game. Being married is not the way you wished it will be. If you want to stay married- happily, this book will make you realize almost everything that you need to learn and you should realize. Thumbs up for this man and for this beautiful book he made!

And now: the mammals
By Ashtar Command
After the stunning success of “Handbook of the Birds of the World” (HBW), a 17-volume mega-opus covering all (!) extant bird species, Lynx Edicions have decided to publish a similar work on mammals. Originally, eight volumes were projected. The number has already swelled to nine, and I wouldn't be too surprised if it swells some more in the future. Of the promised nine volumes, six have been published so far. This is the very first one, dealing with carnivores (except pinnipeds).

The concept is similar to HBW, with stunning color plates, dramatic color photos, extensive species presentations and a very high price. I admit that I haven't procured this volume, instead basing my review on the previews available at the publisher's website. My immediate impression is that the text is less heavy than that found in HBW, suggesting a conscious orientation to a more commercial market. Indeed, the success of the bird encyclopedia was always a bit anomalous, given the difficult scientific articles and extortionate price tag! If the “HMW” will become more popular is difficult to say, given the large amount of popularized books available on charismatic megafauna, but who knows…

As a side point, I noticed that the Giant Panda has finally been recognized as a bear. Thank you.

Super! (except for the price).
By JJ Schwartz
Wonderful in depth accounts and heavily illustrated with photos that I've never seen before. I guess that this is what would be classified as a coffee table book. I'd give the book five stars but for the outrageous price

Great detailed book for Mammal lovers!
By connor
I would like would just like to say that this book is just the start of an amazing collection of books. I own the first 4 volumes and am getting the 5th on Marsupials and Monotremes this June. The book has amazing illustrations for every known species of Mammal in the order Carnivora up till its publication date, 2009. I found the book to be incredibly useful in studying behavior of the species along with there taxonomy, which is always in flux, with around 7 to 10 species of Carnivore being recognized sense the book was published. By far, this book is the best reference guide for any mammalogist or anyone interested in mammals. This book also focuses around mammalian conservation, and to conserve an animal, people must first know the animal, and this book and the next 7 books that will follow will allow for people to get to know the worlds mammals in depth. Also having distribution maps and color illustrations for every species and color photographs for nearly all of them. And something I found great, is that they don't just focus on a single common species in the family text, they always include huge amounts of information from all the species in the family.

You Have Seen Their Faces (Brown Thrasher Books Ser.), by Erskine Caldwell

In the middle years of the Great Depression, Erskine Caldwell and photographer Margaret Bourke-White spent eighteen months traveling across the back roads of the Deep South―from South Carolina to Arkansas―to document the living conditions of the sharecropper. Their collaboration resulted in You Have Seen Their Faces, a graphic portrayal of America's desperately poor rural underclass. First published in 1937, it is a classic comparable to Jacob Riis's How the Other Half Lives, and James Agee and Walker Evans's Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, which it preceded by more than three years.

Caldwell lets the poor speak for themselves. Supported by his commentary, they tell how the tenant system exploited whites and blacks alike and fostered animosity between them. Bourke-White, who sometimes waited hours for the right moment, captures her subjects in the shacks where they lived, the depleted fields where they plowed, and the churches where they worshipped.

Saw the Faces of my Ancestors
By Connie L. Hill
Just read this book for the first time. I am a 42 year old woman from South Carolina who has been researching her family tree for several years now. I knew that my paternal grandfather's family was extremely poor and that they "worked other people's land" Someone once described their existence as being similar to the family Caldwell wrote about in Tobacco Road. This book is beautifully written and predicted the civil rights movement thirty years before it happened. A very good book for someone interested in learning about the history of poverty in the South and how it affected not just the Black population but the impoverished whites as well. It eloquently explains how poverty and ignorance bred anger and unrest between the poor whites and the poor blacks of the post civil war depression era south. The photographs are beautiful and stunning. I think it should be a required book for the average high school student studying the history of the deep south and all of it's issues of the early to mid twentieth century. Amazing that it was written in the mid 1930's and you can still see and almost feel the pain of hunger and absolute poverty in the faces and eyes of the people photographed and hear the sadness and hopelessness in their voices.

an amazing depiction of Depression era Southern poverty in words and pictures
By F. Orion Pozo
In the early years of the Great Depression, author Erskine Caldwell and photographer Margaret Bourke-White spent 18 months in the American Southern states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee interviewing and photographing tenant farmers, commonly known as sharecroppers. This book, published in 1935 is the result of their work. Caldwell wrote about sharecroppers barely scraping a living from land drained of all fertility, the landlords who kept 10 million Southerners in economic slavery to produce cotton, and the politicians and ministers who supported the system rather than reform it. While he interviewed, Bourke-White sat quietly with camera ready to photograph them. It includes 75 mostly, full-page pictures taken by her that portray the destitute life of the tenant farming families. This is an amazing depiction of Southern poverty in words and pictures that I found very moving in spite of its age.

I paid $.50 and whenever I pick it up to look through it again, am surprised at my bargain: Bourke-White's photos cum captions get into your head, stay there; the text, Caldwell as Caldwell. It is a slice of our Southern history - black and white - all ages - poverty is the equalizer here, taking prisoners and spitting them out. A photo of a white kid grinning because he is going fishing, showing his teeth, so badly misshapen; yet, at the moment of that photo, the best he will have for the rest of his life. Black women lining up for the $4/month government "old age pension," being grateful for the "helping hand for the colored people." Stunning, amazing, searing. Cannot imagine why my copy was given away as I surely will not ever be doing that.

This fresh new series is full of girl--and flower--power.

Delphinium "Del" Bloom loves her grandparents' flower shop, where it's always peaceful and calm--unlike her cluttered house, where her three sisters--Rose, Aster, and Poppy--constantly cause drama. But then Gran and Gramps move away and leave the flower shop in the care of Del's scatterbrained parents! Their first order is for a big wedding and the bride wants everything--especially the flowers--to be PERFECT. Worse, the mean girl in Del's class happens to be a junior bridesmaid! A Wonderful New MG Read
By Mundie Moms & Mundie Kids Book Reviews
I love the cover on this book! It matches the story perfectly. This is such a fun read and one I wish I had when I was younger. I enjoyed getting to know Del and her close knit family, who do a lot together and are always helping each other out. Del's family dynamics reminded me a bit of my family when I was growing up. She's close with her mom, dad, sisters and grandparents, who get together each week for family movie night. Del also loves to help out in her Grandparent's locally owned flower shop on Saturday's, a shop that's been in the family for years. It wasn't hard to fall in love with Del. She's relatable, funny, very responsible and a relatable character.

Things change for Del when her Grandparents head off to FL. Its hard for Del to accept that they're gone, and even harder for her to realize that it's okay for her mom to run the flower shop the way she wants to. Through the course of the story Del learns the importance of working together as a family. I loved being able to be apart of her world for a bit. It was fun to see what middle school was like for her. She has some great friends, her first crush, and she has to deal with the school's Queen Bee, aka Ashley, who's less than friendly towards Del. What I loved about Del is that she stands up for herself and towards the end of the story when something happens to Ashley, Del does the unthinkable and helps her. There's also a sweet, innocent crush between Del and Hamilton, who by the way is a fabulous character to meet.

I really adored this story and I'm really looking forward to following Del her story with the rest of the series. This is a series I look forward to reading with my daughter and I highly recommend picking it up.

Petal Pushers
By B. Feely
I purchased this book for the story line and the name Corrine in it. Last year I searched for books that contained my nieces and nephews names. She is a ten year old girl and this was the closest age appropriate book.

It is a very good story that a young girl would like. My niece enjoys reading it, though it takes her a little long because of all the words. She was able to keep up with the story line. I hope you enjoy it as much as she did.

Take Me There: Oasis- The Story, by Paul Mathur

Author Paul Mathur can be said to have "discovered" Oasis: he first saw them in March 1993, rehearsing in the tiny basement of a Manchester club, and became the first person to champion the band in the music press - six months before they signed a major record deal, and a year before anyone else picked up on them. Since those early days, his enduring close friendship with the band has allowed him unique access to them every step of the way. He has witnessed not only hundreds of their gigs all over the world (and the attendant dressing-room antics), but also the recording of their albums and many of their singles. He even contributed handclaps to their first number one single, "Some Might Say". This biography traces the career of the band, including sections on: the members' childhoods, and the passage from the early gigs to sell-out tours all over the world; behind-the-scenes reportage from the recording sessions; and candid interviews with family and friends. Oasis have topped every chart, won almost every award and provoked comment from every quarter.

An Important Read For any Modern Rock Fan
By mbrookpm
This highly entertaining book captures not only the spirit of one of the most influential rock bands of the 1990's, but also gives an insightful look into the emotional conflict among the band members. Intelligently written by one who has had close, personal contact with the group from their emergence on the musical scene.

Definitive Story of Giants
By davephillips66@hotmail.com
At last a book about Oasis where the author knows what he's talking about! Paul Mathurs has been with the band from the start and they trust him which lays the solid foundation for the best book about Oasis to date.
This book is a must for anyone interested in Oasis and highly recommended for anyone who merely has a passing interest. It charts the band from their beginning to the release of Be Here Now (the interesting years!). It is a thorough and amusing account of the band's rise to fame and the downners along the way, especially with some of the tales form America.
Mathurs writes with a knowing, chatty and humourous edge which makes this book extremely addictive and you will no doubt be shocked and amazed by some of the antics covered! The sections where Robbie Williams pops up are simply unbelievable considering recent events. The constant banter of the Gallaghers highlighted in the book is great for the comic element and the comments on the bands music (always the most important thing with Oasis) are honest and truly meant.
A great read with highlights in every chapter. Buy it.

A truly in-depth account of Oasis
By wwcs@erols.com
This book will definitely grab your attention if you're an Oasis fan. Fanatics will love the great color photos. Even if you don't like the band, the stories (following Noel and Liam's exploits from Oasis's conception to mid-1996) will provoke astonishment, laughter, and intrigue. The background information on everything from the development of the songs to the interband relationships are highly interesting. Along Oasis's monumental rise, the brothers share their strange and expected encounters with friends like Paul McCartney, Evan Dando, John McEnroe, Ringo Starr, Micheal Hutchence, Bono, Lars Ulrich and others. My favorite part is when Liam gets into a argument with a grunge fan at Oasis's first New York show who tells Liam he'll "never amount to anything".

WINNER OF THE 2013 PULITZER PRIZE FOR BIOGRAPHY

General Alex Dumas, is a man almost unknown today, yethis story is strikingly familiar—because his son, the novelist Alexandre Dumas, used his larger-than-life featsas inspiration for such classics as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.
But, hidden behindGeneral Dumas'sswashbuckling adventures was an even more incredible secret:he was the son of a black slave—who rose higher in the white world than any man of his race would before our own time.
Born in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), Alex Dumas made his way to Paris, where herose to command armies at the height of the Revolution—until he met an implacable enemy he could not defeat.
TIME magazine called The Black Count "one of those quintessentially human stories of strength and courage that sheds light on the historical moment that made itpossible." It is also a heartbreaking story of the enduring bonds of love between a father and son.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month, September 2012: Generations have been enthralled by Alexandre Dumas' characters, especially the wronged hero in The Count of Monte Cristo and the daring swordsmen in The Three Musketeers. Yet few realize that these memorable characters were inspired by Dumas' father, General Alex Dumas, the son of a French count and a black Haitian slave. Tom Reiss brings the elder Dumas alive with previously unpublished correspondence and meticulous research, providing the context necessary to understand how exceptional his life as a mulatto general in a slave-owning empire truly was. From single-handedly holding a bridge in the Alps against 20 enemies to spending years held captive in a fortress, Alex Dumas is a fascinating character that not even his son's vivid imagination could have dreamed up. --Malissa Kent

An Essay by Author Tom Reiss

I've always loved exploring history. It's like an uncharted hemisphere, and when you look at it closely, it has a tendency to change everything about your own time. I'm also drawn to outsiders, people who have swum against the tide. I often feel like a kind of detective hired to go find people who have been lost to history, and discover why they were lost. Whodunnit?

In this case, I found solid evidence that, of all people, Napoleon did it: he buried the memory of this great man – Gen. Alexandre Dumas, the son of a black slave who led more than 50,000 men at the height of the French Revolution and then stood up to the megalomaniacal Corsican in the deserts of Egypt. (The "famous" Alexandre Dumas is the general's son – the author of The Three Musketeers.) Letters and eyewitness accounts show that Napoleon came to hate Dumas not only for his stubborn defense of principle but for his swagger and stature – over six feet tall and handsome as a matinee idol – and for the fact that he was a black man idolized by the white French army. (I found that Napoleon's destruction of Dumas coincided with his destruction of one of the greatest accomplishments of the French Revolution – racial equality – a legacy he also did his best to bury.)

I first came across Gen. Dumas's life in the memoir of his son Alexandre, the novelist. And what a life! Alex Dumas, as he preferred to be known, was born in Saint Domingue, later Haiti, the son of a black slave and a good-for-nothing French aristocrat who came to the islands to make a quick killing and instead barely survived. In fact, to get back to France in order to claim an inheritance, he actually "pawned" his black son into slavery, but then he bought him out, brought him to Paris, and enrolled him in the royal fencing academy, and then the story begins to get interesting.

What really stuck with me from reading the memoir was the love that shows through from the son, the writer, for his father, the soldier. I could never forget the novelist describing the day his father died. His mother met him on the stairs in their house, lugging his father's gun over his shoulders, and asked him what he was doing. Little Alexandre replied: "I'm going to heaven to kill God – for killing daddy." When he grew up, he took a greater sort of revenge, infusing his father's life and spirit into fictional characters like Edmond Dantes and D'Artagnan, with shades of Porthos, too. But the image of the angry child stuck with me and drove me onward to discover every scrap of evidence I could about his forgotten father.

And recovering the life of the real man behind these stories was the ultimate historical prospecting journey for me: I learned about Maltese knights and Mameluke warriors, the tricks of 18th-century spycraft and glacier warfare, torchlight duels in the trenches and portable guillotines on the front; I got to know about how Commedia del Arte influenced Voodoo and how a Jacobin sultan influenced the Star-Spangled Banner, about chocolate cures for poisoning and the still brisk trade in Napoleonic hair clippings. I discovered the amazing forgotten civil rights movement of the 18th century – and its unraveling – though the most amazing thing about this story of a black man in a white world was how little race stood in his way: how Alex Dumas's future father-in-law never once questioned his daughter marrying a man of color but only asked that he get promoted to sergeant first (later he lovingly referred to his son-in-law simply as "the General").

Finally, the memoir set me not only on a historical adventure but on an adventure in the present day that was straight out of a Dumas novel. I began by visiting the gray town in northeast France where the general died – where I found a dead museum secretary, a locked safe, and a host of unlikely, inspiring characters to make my journey a far from lonely one.

—Luc Sante, author of Low Life, Evidence, and The Factory of Facts

—Gideon Lewis-Kraus, author of A Sense of Direction

“The Black Count is totally thrilling—a fascinating, beautifully written, and deeply researched biography that brings to life one of history’s great forgotten characters: the swashbuckling, flamboyant, and romantic mulatto count whose true life belongs in a Hollywood movie or Alexandre Dumas story.”
—Simon Sebag Montefiore, author of Jerusalem: The Biography and Young Stalin

“Tom Reiss tells the incredible story of Alex Dumas with the same excitement about uncovering history that he brought to The Orientalist.”
—Nina Burleigh, New York Times bestselling author of Mirage: Napoleon’s Scientists and the Unveiling of Egypt

As Reiss shows us, answers can be found in the extraordinary life of a forgotten French hero of the great revolutionary campaigns—a hero who was black.”
—Timothy Snyder, author of Bloodlands and The Red Prince

Dramatic, Historical, and Reader-Friendly
By Michael P. Lefand
The creative way in which Tom Reiss has written "The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal and the Real Count of Monte Crisco" is remarkable. In writing the biography of General Alexandre Dumas, the father of the famous author Alexandre Dumas, Reiss engages the reader with the connections between the real life experiences of the father and the characters, plots, and locations used by the son in his novels "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Three Musketeers." Many of General Dumas exploits such as his imprisonment without trial in the Taranto fortress in the Kingdom of Naples by "The Holy Faith Army" would become inspiration for the son's later book "The Count of Monte Cristo."

Thomas-Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie arrived in France from Saint-Domingue (Haiti) as a slave in 1776 at age 14, the son of a white fugitive aristocrat, the Marquis de la Pailleterie, and a black slave, Cessette Dumas. Enlisting in the army in June of 1786 Thomas-Alexandre would change his name to Alexandre Dumas for a number of reasons. Among the possible reasons, anger at his father for having sold him in Saint-Domingue or as an aristocrat's son he would be damaging his father name (the Marquis) by enlisting as a private instead of officer as was expected. Note: Thomas-Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie would have had difficulty becoming an officer because of his mixed race and the law making it difficult to claim his rightful title.

Alexandre's rise through the military ranks from private to general would be meteoric owing to the circumstances of the French Revolution and because of his individual attributes, such as bravery on the battlefield, his strength, equestrian ability, and swordsmanship. Rising above the racial injustices of the period General Dumas excelled as one of the most legendary cavalry generals in Europe.

"The Black Count" is an admirable biography; the military life of Dumas revolves around the French Revolution 1789-1799 of which Reiss covers in a concise although brief manner. The book is well researched and the determination by the author to seek out all letters, diaries, and official military records is evident in his Prologue and the bibliography. I found the book fascinating and informative and look forward to more works by Tom Reiss. I highly recommend this book and give it the 5 Stars it deserves.

Chock full of well-written history and swash
By J. C Clark
I recently told my son I was reading a biography of Alexandre Dumas, not the novelist, but his father. He raised an eyebrow and said, "You must have more time than I do." He assumed this would be similar to the biography of Hemingway's father, or Steinbeck's father, men we know of only because they had famous sons. But that is just not the case. If young Alexandre had died in infancy, the story of his dashing and remarkable father would still be one worth reading. What an astonishing life.

While I would consider myself to know more history than the average joe, my knowledge and understanding of France's past was clearly more slight than I realized. That gap has been diminished immeasurably by this wonderful book. For it deftly and skillfully places the events of the times in the context of the life I was reading about, merging the biography of a gallant, fiery and elegant man and an overview of one of the most tumultuous periods in history. And does so in a manner that manages to keep the reader focused on what was happening at the time, rather than dragging in those irritating, "If only he had known what was about to happen" or "His dreams would soon be shattered" brickbats. And the sordid and sad tale of the temporary revolutionary racial equality and its demise was wonderfully told. That itself would make a great book.

My only complaint, and it is just a minor irritation but one that prevents the fifth star, is the incessant authorial interjections. I guess when you see the author's name is Tom, not Thomas, you can expect a more casual book, and while the author is clearly a scholar and superlative researcher, there were, for my taste, too many "When I read this..." and "While discussing that.." moments. I know you read these documents. Bringing yourself in was just, to me, clumsy and unnecessary.

But an exciting, nay, amazing tale of a man who was born nowhere with nothing, rising to the top by his own efforts, and then through bad luck and bad people being brought low. When they film this, as they surely must, I hope they remain true to the facts, for this is a glorious and informative tale of honor, dedication, strength, passion and patriotism. A wonderful telling of a spectacular tale.

The Real Count of Monte Cristo, Titan of the French Revolution
By Tell Me A Story
Cudos, Mr. Reiss, you have written a masterpiece!

This detailed book reads like a novel, with its fluid narrative that presents the autobiographical story of Alex Dumas and his tremendous contribution to the French Revolution. Mr. Reiss weaves a fascinating story while incorporating a plethora of resources having expended years of effort in accumulating tremendous research materials to substantiate the accuracy of this account.

It is a quick read that connects the dots and encompasses critical historic moments leading to the re-creation of France and eventually much of the European theater.

Surely, this epic tome will become required reading for historians, who want a fresh perspective on the French Revolution and how the freed mulatto slave, Alexandre Dumas born in what is now Haiti, demonstrated throughout his military career, using his tremendous strategic skill, honor, courage and fighting aptitude to win many battles!

At first, Mr. Reiss presents a brief history of his father, Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie who having left France to seek his fortune in Saint-Domingue (Haiti), then a resource rich colony of France, known for its great production of sugar cane. He married a wealthy woman and purchased a plantation and slaves to become a sugar producer. Later, he purchased a black woman, Marie-Cessette, who was considered quite a beauty for a tremendous sum. Together, they had four children, including a son named Thomas- Alexandre (whom later detached from his father's noble status instead used part of his mother's full name, to be known as Alexandre Dumas or Alex Dumas). When mismanagement led to great debt, Alexandre Pailleterie eventually fled Haiti to return to France , nearly penniless, he sold his mistress and their three living children as slaves, to acquire the money necessary to purchase passage to France for himself and Alexandre. Once they arrived in France, Alexandre attended school and trained as a swordsman, quite quickly, his talent at swordsmanship, gained him great renown throughout France.

Alex joined the military and quickly arose through the ranks, his great intelligence and exceptional bravery in battle soon got him the recognition of his superiors and subsequent promotions. Within very little time, he was moved up the ranks rapidly. Breaking the color barrier again and again soon becoming in charge significant numbers of men, first among the "dragoons"- free men of color, mainly from Saint-Domingue; eventually he was given charge of thousands of white men. His assignments met with marvelous tales of courage. He was entrusted on many occasions to perform reconnaissance missions and often his actions caused the enemy to cede an area or surrender before any great fighting ensued. There are numerous tales of his tremendous valor and talent when ambushed; on one such event, he alone fought 8 men killing 3 and wounding others, those who could fled; while he only sustained a few light surface wounds. Eventually, his accomplishments were fully acknowledge and he was bestowed the title of General. His fame and great accomplishments of service led to a terrible captivity in Naples, Italy where multiple attempts of poisoning nearly killed him due to his already declining health. Likewise, physical attacks were rendered, though he was far outnumbered and despite of his poor health, he proved his expert skills were still far superior to his enemy combatants.

His career terminated in sad fashion as Bonaparte sought to destroy him. Napolean Bonaparte, once an equal to Dumas, was a consummate politician, who took credit for many of Dumas's strategies and successes. His deceit and cunning allowed him to install puppets among the various bodies of the new government; who in turn advanced Bonaparte in power and notoriety. As his influence increased, his jealousy of Dumas allowed him to systematically dismantle the authority and career Dumas had earned. Had Dumas not attained such tremendous admiration even among those whom he confronted in battle or was sent to occupy; Napolean more than likely would have attempted to set him up for treason or used some other means to murder Dumas.

Were he alive today, he would probably be in charge of the equivalent of our Special Forces or some other distinguished elite military command post. Few displayed such a commitment that surpassed all other priorities; having chose to repeatedly lay down his life to build a new France which empowered all people at all costs; being given extended assignments, many lasting years at time away from his adored wife and children, salary and health and eventually his life.

It was his son, Alexandre Dumas, who continued to memorialize his father's exploits through stories "The Count of Monte Cristo", "The Three Musketeers" and also a biography.

This is a must read for those who love history. Enjoy!
