This Works!....Period.

I was a real "student" of running back in the day. When my kids started running in HS, I picked up the old habit. This is a fabulous theory BUT it runs smack in the face of everything I was taught as a kid, which was to run hard 3 times a week. In a nut shell. Train at a Heart Rate (HR) between 68 - 72%. NEVER go over 75%. Then go to a track every week and run a 5 miler maintaining HR at 70% of maxHR. What you'll find, as I did, was my time per mile dropped by about a min and 30 sec. HR and distance are kept constant, only pace increases. It is hard though, mentally when fat old slogs in the neighborhood run past you on training runs. I did this for over 9 months before jumping into my first Triathlon. And I flew. I crushed it. All the guys I'd been training with, that killed me on training runs, were nowhere to be seen on race day! I played guinea pig with myself...it works! Bad news is, could never convince the HS coach to let my kids train the same way. Oh, one more thing. According to this theory, you know you're ready to race when your weekly 5 mile time no longer improves for about 3 weeks in a row. That is when you can add a little speed and or start racing.

A must read for endurance athletes

Dr. Maffetone is on the cutting edge of training techniques and advanced nutrition. His program has worked for thousands of athletes, in my opinion, because his program is so easy to apply. Whether you plan to compete at a high level, or you wish to beat the neighbor at the local 5K, this book will teach you to train to maximize your benefits. The best part of this training technique is that the training is anything but "intense" or grueling. The training is moderate for maximum benefits. I would also recommend his first book, "In Fitness and In Health". One major flaw of this book is the numerous typographical errors which cause the reader to ponder the time spent writing and editing this tome. If you look past the errors, you will learn a lot.

this easy to read book distills the essence of endurance training to a few fundamentals, that, if you follow, you will find yourself on the awards podium. no kidding here. folks who adhere to the maffetone method--using aerobic, not anaerobic--to train the body know what i am talking about. phil is the best thing to happen to triathlon since julie moss circa 1982.

About the Author
Donald Guthrie, B.D., M.Th., Ph.D., who died in 1992, was professor of New Testament Language and Literature at London (England) Bible College and a member of the International Society for New Testament Studies. Decent read

I bought this book for a class I am taking for college. I find it to be a decent read, with many good points about Jesus life. It can be somewhat difficult to get through at times (I am very picky about print types, and his is not usually what I enjoy) but it is easy to understand and helps define things you may never have been able to previously.

This is a must read book on marriage and relationships! It is one of the best I've ever read. It is easy to read because the ideas are written and explained so clearly. The book is full of helpful stories that illustrate the ideas and show you how to implement the changes you want to make. Even when reading the introduction I began making changes immediately. Hubby even listened better!

I consider my marriage to be a good one -- but there are always areas that can use some fine-tuning! So when I came upon Dr. Welpton's blog and immediately found useful advice on how to communicate better, I wanted to read this book to get more info -- and I already put some of his techniques to work successfully!

A quick example of how I used some of what I learned in this book: Hubby and I had different opinions about bringing someone on to help us with our home-based business. In the past, I would have just "bulldozed" him over, forcing my reasons on him while he would have equally and vigorously defended his own objections.

But this time, I did what Dr. Welpton advised: I repeated back what he was saying to me, basically word-for-word. I didn't try to convince or persuade him of my opinion; I just really HEARD him and LISTENED to him. More importantly, hubby GOT that I listened to him and UNDERSTOOD what he was saying. Then, the miraculous happened: he also LISTENED and UNDERSTOOD what I was saying, too! We had a clear conversation, without extreme emotion and we both felt clearer about each other's views. That's not to say we AGREED with each other -- we didn't -- but we respected and understood each other. Now we have a plan as to what steps we are going to take to bring someone on in the business. I predict this will turn out well, because there will be no resentment on either side. A small success, perhaps, but an important one; and I will continue to use this strategy!

Bottom line: the info in Dr. Welpton's book is practical, clear and immediately applicable! I enjoyed reading the personal stories of others who are profiled in the book, and to see how they evolved. Dr. Welpton's writing style is clear, caring and compassionate and made me feel like I was having a personal therapy session. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to improve their relationships!

An Enlightening Read

Attract Love, Intimacy and Money by Doug Welpton, M.D. is a fascinating book filled with vignettes of real life problems and solutions. There are questions to orient the reader before each chapter, examples with teachable moments and insights into the dynamics of the problems, and behavioral changes to incorporate as coping skills. This book was insightful for me. It is easy to read and to comprehend. Diagrams help picture many points. Life's lessons should only be so simple, but that's why we have psychiatrists to create sense and happiness out of human drama and stress. This is a success formula.

About the Author
John Kricher is Professor of Biology at Wheaton College, where he is the first recipient of the Bojan Hamlin Jennings Chair in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Among the many books he has written are A Field Guide to Ecology of Eastern Forests and A Field Guide to Ecology of Western Forests.

If you are travelling to the American tropics buy this book

This is just about the best introduction to the natural history of the New World tropics available and is a real bargain at this price. Another good alternative is "Tropical Nature" by Forsyth and Miyata.

I have been using this book since the first edition came out and now have both. It's also one of the books I try to pick up used to give to budding tropical naturalists. And to judge by the number of first-time visitors who carry this book, it is still proving extremely popular. I like the way the author has tried to give a broad overview of the important themes without compromising accuracy. Besides explanations of ecological processes and descriptions of wildlife, there is a strong emphasis on conservation with the final chapter devoted to "Deforestation and Conservation of Diversity". As a companion to the tropical naturalist this will be hard to beat.

Great Introductory Text

I found Kricher's text to be an enlightening, easy read for those interested in learning a subject they're not too familiar with. His explanations are satisfactory and he provides a broad, encyclopedic insight into the Neotropics as well as references for further reading. I also found his quips to be a nice break from the dry and tiresome technicalities that the topic often entails. Overall I think his book provides exactly what it he intended: an introductory text into Neotropical ecology.

A recommended book for the traveler and scientist

I live and work in Central America, and therefore often need information on a wide variety of topics regarding the local ecology. This book has served me very well as a resource which gives concise but engaging explanations of lots of the aspects of the ecosystems here. Perhaps the most important flaw is the lack of information on freshwater aquatic ecosystems. Similarly to other publications, this book leaves one with the impression that there is not much interesting about freshwater except in the Amazon drainage.
