Good short-story

This was an interesting story. To be perfectly honest (which is a little embarrassing), I bought this kindle book based on the title. I thought it would really contain actual "safety tips for living alone." It does not, however! This is a short story -- not a full length book -- about some members of the Air Force who were stationed to a tower off of New York, when a storm hits.
But while the story ended up being nothing like I'd expected, I still loved it. It's interesting, and it's very, very well written.

The perfect storm for Texas Tower No. 4

Although the Cold war ended almost a quarter of a century ago, stories are still coming out about some of the events and incidents that occurred during that era when the world was poised on the brink of nuclear war. One of those stories involves the tragic loss of an early warning radar station - Texas Tower No. 4 - that was located in the waters off Long Island, New York. Although it was known that the tower was unsafe and could collapse during a bad storm, the military's delay in evacuating the tower's personnel resulted in all 28 men on the tower losing their lives. The facts of the incident are well known, but author Jim Shepard puts a human face on the tragedy by focusing on four of the tower's crewmen and their wives during those last hours of the tower's existence. Using the recollections of four of the men's wives who spoke with their husbands by phone in the hours before the tower was swept away, Shepard describes their last conversations and their increasing frustrations and fears as it became clear that the tower and its crew were doomed. It's a poignant story of husbands and wives' last conversations, knowing that they would never see each other again.
In a story about the length of an expanded magazine article, the author has done a fine job of relating the tragedy of the last hours of Texas Tower No. 4 and its crew.
