Essential reading

This book is really essential reading for anyone trying to gain a better understanding of the Bible. The author was, among other pursuits, involved translating the New English Bible, and his experience in that project clearly informs his approach here. But this isn't your usual Hebrew-Greek word study book. Instead, it is a book about words themselves. As Prof. Caird writes:
"We will be addressing ourselves not to the languages of the Bible, but to its language; not to the fact that it stands written in ancient and foreign tongues, the speech of ancient and alien cultures, but to the more fundamental fact that it is written in words."
Much of the material in this book could be applied profitably to understanding the language of books other than the Bible, and many of the references used by Prof. Caird are to sources outside Biblical studies. In fact he says right at the outset that:
"This book might well be described as a text book of elementary semantics with illustrations from the Old and New Testaments."
All in all, highly recommended.

It is Rhetorical

Too academic for the layperson. For most people it is enough to know that the new testament authors were probably aware of Greek rhetorical styles and if they had an education were trained in these styles. It is not clear to me that knowing different types of Greek rhetorical styles and that parts of the new testament seem to fit in those styles is that helpful in reading and interpreting the new testament.

Brilliant, essential reading

Anyone serious about studying the bible will appreciate this book. A masterful and cogent overview of how to approach the bible as a book, but also so much more.
Cuts through the quasi-intellectual arguments about taking the text literally or metaphorically, leading to a real grown up's approach to understanding inspiration.
