i received the book in great condition, and in a short amount of time, the only complaint here is that we no longer get to see any new Altman films

Thomson on Altman

Really, you can't do better than this to inform yourself about the Altman films you've seen, and introduce yourself to those you have not seen -- for instance, for me, Secret Honor, Philip Baker Hall's brilliant performance of Richard Nixon in extremis. I write a film review blog, moviemoody.com, and this book, as with all his books, is a necessary text, for which I am grateful to Altman and Thomson both. The book covers as much as David Thomson's knowledge extends, which is pretty far. So you get insights into some of the technical challenges and tricks Altman used, you get a good sense of Altman's business deals, his sense of actors, and how things got to the screen and how things did not get to the screen. Altman is quite open, and does not make a case for himself at all. So we are not at the mercy of being told how wonderful everyone was. Thomson tells Altman's story from the start, so it serves as a satisfactory biography. The book has good illustrations, a thorough bibliography, an index, and a full personnel list of Altman's work, including his non-credited work and TV work. For Altman liked to keep busy. Most directors do not get to continue working to the age he worked. He became well known only with M.A.S.H., when he was well into his 40s, and was still at the end of his life making good movies, such as Gosford Park and A Prairie Home Companion. I can't recommend the book more highly than to say I can't.

A Fascinating Career

When I thought of Robert Altman before reading this book, I typically thought of him as a "Seventies" director who had had a few hits in recent years.
This book shows how limited that view of Altman was. It is a wide-ranging interview that covers Altman's career from his stint as an extra in "Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (!!!) to directing "The Company." He talks about his involvement with the classic TV series "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "Combat" as well as directing Broadway plays and a couple operas.
And, of course, he talks about his films, the classics that everyone remembers and those that got buried by the critics. From it all, Altman emerges as a fascinating character who pursued his own vision and took advantage of changes in the media to be relatively successful.
Essential reading for anyone interested in recent American film.
