Great continuation of the Magpie Lord series

4.5 stars - I love this series, and sometimes I get carried away when I go back and think of the Magpie Lord journey over the three books, and what’s transpired for poor overworked Stephen and his demanding, entitled, and sexily supportive Lord Crane, and what terrible things they have survived, including attacks by hair(!!!), killer giant rats, invading spirits, and a group of merciless warlocks that want nothing more than to rip the Magpie Lord’s power from Crane’s bones.

So how was book 3? Well, did you like book 1 and 2? Because if you did, then you’re going to like book 3. It’s a similar style and tone, still surprising with some shocking turns (as the villains are very villainy!!), similar wit and sexy banter between Stephen and Crane as they push-pull each other about their relationship, about keeping secrets, and about whether committing to each other is what’s best for them, especially since being gay is still illegal in Victorian England. (But even with the fear of the Law or blackmail, these two can’t stay away from each other, thankfully for us hungry readers.) Also, like in past books, you will find some more hot sexy times as Stephen leaves his obligations outside the bedroom, and willingly surrenders control to his Lord.

Have you not read book 1 or 2 yet? *Then don’t start here.* It would be a crime against your possible reading pleasure to jump in at this point. What I would recommend is to go try book 1, especially if you’re a fan of historicals and paranormal, since Charles’ world is a mix of dangerous magic and Victorian morals, with a grateful dash of face-punching, thanks to always-good-back-up manservant Merrick and the not-really-all-that-noble Crane.

Was it a perfect read? No. There’s one development where I shared Stephen’s shock, and it felt less organic than other parts of the series. As a reader, I didn’t “buy it,” and it did feel like a convenient move to comfortably pair other characters off. But even with that point, it was still easy to be carried along with the story’s quick pace and plot.

How do I feel about the series overall? I think it’s a stellar trilogy, and if there are no more novels, I think it is reads great as is, and any reader who has enjoyed the ride thus far with Stephen and Crane should feel good about the ending these two so much deserve after all that they have survived.

What’s next? There actually IS a new Magpie story coming in early 2015, but it’s labeled A Charm of Magpies 2.5, so is set technically before this volume. Also, early next year, there is Jackdaw, which is a related book that follows a secondary character from this volume and his adventures, and by the hints in the blurb, we may also see some Magpie Lord sightings there as well.

Would I read more of this series? Of course! I’m a greedy reader and if the next book was just Stephen and Crane talking about the weather (“Looks like rain.” “That it does.”) I’d pick it up in a heartbeat, but end of the day, even for this greedy reader, this journey settles very well in this volume, and I think other greedy readers will be quite pleased.

Practice comes full circle. Lucien and Stephen—Lord Crane and Mr. Day—face their ultimate test, as men and as a couple.

In “Flight of Magpies” KJ Charles offers us the third, and most exciting, of the Charm of Magpies series, although there are two short stories that expand the magpie universe to five. The setting, the characters, both primary and supporting, the action, and even the sex; all work together to provide a page-turning adventure that will have you begging for more at the end.

Something about the language, the dialogue, in this volume is especially riveting. Both Lord Crane and Stephen Day speak with such acuity and power. Each of them has great moments of soliloquy that give us insight into their true strength and character. There’s a shivery level of un-lordlike verbiage from Lucien that reminds us of his very colorful, not to say violent and dangerous, past. We see his longtime servant Mr. Merrick in a new light, and remember that he is neither Jeeves nor Downton Abbey’s Carson. We delve more deeply into the politics of the magical control system in Victorian London, and we are dragged into a series of hideous murders more terrifying than anything ever dreamed up by Conan Doyle.

The importance of the action, however, is secondary to the interplay between Lucien and Stephen. This is the book where the nature of their bond, of their love for each other, is challenged. It is represented physically in their sexual interaction, but also in the magpie tattoos they share because of the magical connection they have through Lucien’s bloodline. If Lucien seems to be the dominant partner—aristocratic, arrogant, and simply physically larger than the diminutive Stephen—then Stephen’s strength lies in his magic, and in his ability to manipulate Lucien’s natural dominance to his own advantage.

What pleased me most, however, was the underlying plot thread focused on the constant awareness on the part of both men that their relationship is considered criminal under English law. The reality of Victorian London is always there, and even in the world of magical practitioners their sexuality is shocking and unacceptable. In the midst of all the other goings-on, it is their very existence as homosexuals that presents the biggest threat to their happiness. Without sidestepping truth, KJ Charles handles this in a thoughtful, and ultimately clever way. In a world where the concept of gay rights is inconceivable, she manages to inject an element of gay pride.

Charles, to her great credit, feels no need to use cliffhangers. This book felt very much like an ending, and perhaps she has decided she’s given us enough of Lord Crane and his magical paramour. Then again, there was an interesting loose end that never got tied up. One can only hope.

Reading the last part in a trilogy is bittersweet. You want the resolution for the characters you’ve followed, but at the same time don’t want their story to totally end. I have to say that KJ Charles brought the story of Lucien and Stephen to a magnificent conclusion.

Life in the judiciary is becoming harder and harder for Stephen, the hours are demanding, pay non-existent and the toll is beginning to tell on his relationship with Lucien. Lord Crane is getting frustrated with the rules and civilised behaviour in England, and yearns to leave.

I thought that this was an amazing conclusion to the series. The character development is masterful, and the feeling of love and friendship is an absolute pleasure to read. Lucien, so strong and in charge is so deliciously vulnerable when it comes to Stephen, and Stephen himself opening up more, understanding himself more , these characters are excellent.

And Merrick, how happy did it make me that Merrick got some more time in the limelight?

The plot itself brings together the loose ends from the first two books, and ties then all in a gorgeously written package, while I wanted to savour this book, once I started it I just could not put it down.

The quality of KJ Charles writing is excellent; in the MM genre there are a few writers who are trying, and succeeding, in doing something different. For me, KJ Charles is at the forefront of those writers, her books keep getting better and better.

Even more difficult, they have to hold each other steady while one finds his peace and the other his voice, because a dream boy isn't really a dream boy if he doesn't know his own worth. Confused reader :(

I rated this book a 5 star rating {It was a great book for what it was} But it was lacking in parts. I truly loved this book but some parts needed more other parts. Would I recommend this book to others??? yes I would. Would I buy it again?? yea. I just really think it needed more to it at parts{ Im really just all over the place with this book Sorry about that}

Talker , pulled at my Heartstrings

Talker was a series of 3 stories that Amy Lane has brought together as one Novel. This story features Tate Walker and Brian Cooper. Just to bring you up to date, Brian and Tate met on a High School Track Team Bus. This meeting changed their lives.

Tate Walker, severely burned as a baby, has scars both outside and in. His flamboyant dress, tattoos and Mohawk hairstyle were a cover up so people would not look beneath; only Brian did. Their friendship grew, as Brian watched Tate walked out the door on a 'date', where he was raped and brutalized, before Brian could `come out' and tell Tate he loved him. The heartbreaking scene when Tate returned home broken and bleeding telling Brian `he had hoped Brian was gay, but now he is so happy he is not, because he is the only one he has ever felt safe with.' Unbeknownst to Tate, Brian had found the rapist Trevor and beat him bloody.

In Talkers Redemption, Trevor in retaliation comes with two men, pipes and chains, attacking Brian in a parking lot, while Tate is sent for help. Brian lies for months in the hospital battered and broken while the `family' they are surrounded with look on; Old Doc Sutherland their friend and psychologist, and Brian's Aunt offers support to the young men. Talker has to make decisions about overcoming your wildest fears and darkest nightmares.

So you are all caught up, and now readers, we are up to And They Could Live Happily Ever After. I was so excited, having to get to see another glimpse of Talker and Brian. We find that it is a few years later, and they are still battling the remains of Brian's physical hurt from that deadly beating. They both now have scars on their bodies, and Brian has started working with clay. Talker bought him this to help his fingers to work better. College is almost over for Brian. Talker isn't even sure he knows what Brian's degree will be. But Brian has gotten a job in an art store and it blossoms into something Brian loves.

Brian's eyes are finally bright with accomplishment. He is creating things with his hands and he loves it. Brian is given a wonderful opportunity, and would walk away from it all for Talker. Brian is the one, the one who has sacrificed all for Talker. We read this beautiful poignant story and your wish is to take all the pain away for both of them. These boys who you have watched are growing into men. They have had to make some tough decisions along the way and deserve the Big Payout. Only Amy Lane can tell the story of love, home and family. We are shown the sculpture that Brian has made that is Talker, and we cry as Tate Walker sees how Brian Cooper sees him and we wish with all our hearts we could have someone bless us with that kind of love.

It's often difficult to rate a series, as the installments vary, so I'm only giving an overall impression of the series as a whole. The Talker series have a really likable pair who readers would easily root for a HEA. And they do have some serious issues to overcome, which makes the first two books so intense and emotional to read, I think the conflicts are valid and ""gripping"" enough to touch even the most cynical readers. However, by the third book though, it starts to get into that area whether its really necessary for another book - the storyline just doesn't ring true to me anymore. The writing is mostly solid and I think the flashbacks (and flash forwards) style was nicely done. I do believe Amy Lane has her own brand of angst which many fans would lap it up, while some readers might find it overwhelming. I tend to be the latter, but that didn't stop me from shedding a few tears for Brian and Talker.

The series gets a 40 (heck, each book gets a 40). I love Talker. Amy Lane takes the worst and spins it until it’s the best. Talker is brought to life in full color 3D. From the moment he’s introduced in Talker, he’s a living, breathing person. He’s someone you could see walking down the street. He’s also that person you either avoid or want to know better because you see past the tattoos and scars to the individual underneath. Throughout the three books, you cry, laugh, cheer, and cry some more. Amy Lane took harsh reality and gave it a place to call home.

A damn good book on practical magic in the modern world.

The Chaos Protocols- Gordon White

The short form: This is a really, really good book. Highly recommended.

What makes it a good book (and particularly a good chaos magic book) are a number of things.

1. Context. The context in which we work now is different from the one in which I first came in contact with chaos magic. Gordon References Stephen Mace’s Stealing the Fire from Heaven which was an early influence on my own work. I bought my copy after reading some of Mace’s article in Chaos International, sending cash to Mr. Mace who sent me what I think I recall as a velo bound book obviously hand typed with illustrations hand set & then photocopied. I think the process took about six weeks in total. A very different time! Consider this again when we look at Crowley, Carroll, Levi, etc. Things change fast. We live & work in a different setting, and our work should reflect that while not rejecting what is effective from the past, which this book does in spades.

Whether you agree 100% with Gordon’s assessment of the current state of the world (I’m probably in the high 90’s personally), this is a damn good thing for most anyone with a magical worldview to read. More important than the technical aspects in most cases.

2. Focus. The book is focused on ‘success’ in a particularly weird economic time, the work & working contained are very much pointed in this direction, in appropriately lateral ways. At the same time, it is a good generalist work, as really all work ‘should’ be pointed towards success, yes? We are not enchanting to fail, right?

3. Technical approaches. In a nice variation from a lot of views on chaos magic, much of the ‘ritual’ bits are modifications of or use parts from VERY old texts, from the PGM, Treatise of Solomon, and Orphic Hymns. These things just work, and to me chaos magic has always been about using what works. Also no fear of of using Judeo-Christian bits, and correcting some of the whack around that.

4. Actual ritual bits. These are well devised, and will certainly work if applied intelligently. A nice section on sigils that while mostly available on the Rune Soup blog would have been an error to leave from the book. This stuff works if you work with it, and this is a nice, simple, wank-free approach. Good stuff. If you aren’t already using Gordon’s shoaling & robofish methods, perhaps this will get you to try them. They work.

5. Probability. This is one of the cornerstones that often gets ignored and causes folk’s metaphorical houses to get all wonky and dropped pens to roll from the living room off into the garage where they are swallowed by a giant crack never to be seen again. Metaphorically speaking.

In closing, the strategic approaches and explanation of working with probabilities, luck generation, and Becoming Invincible are all gold. The ritual and technical bits are very good, and give a nice, compact tool set to do nearly anything that one would want to approach from a magical perspective. Some of these will be brought into my own work to see how they play with what I already do, and that really almost never happens, and that is about the highest praise I can give a book.

This one gets added to Visual Magick: A Manual of Freestyle Shamanism by Jan Fries, The Oracle Travels Light by Camelia Elias, and Protection and Reversal Magic by Jason Miller, and Draja Mickaharics books as my top suggestions for general books on magic as I see it in practice.

The Chaos Protocols

I have to say *this* is a step forward for Chaos Magick. I've been out of the chaos loop for a few years for some reasons but this book showed me how someone CAN avoid Carrol, Hines and Julian whoever he is and the incoherent leftist ego maniacal mentally diseased mumbo jumbo that comes out of their brains.

Mr. White offers an excellent concise and specific guide for the economically crumbling age that we are going through right now. This book should interest people who want to know more about the global economy (in general) and how that affects their personal financial situation. The 1st chapter is dedicated entirely to this and it is actually very well written with deep knowledge of the subject (and at the same time you don't need a degree in economics to read)

He continues by turning to consciousness and scientific quantum theories and then moves on with spiritual/magical terms and practices. I will admit that the pattern he uses in writing this book is very appealing to me even when my brain refuses to pay attention during his economic lessons so much so that i decided to re-read from the start and pay *attention* this time. All in all an unexpected (for me) excellent piece of CM writing.

Gordon once again knocks one over the fence, presenting us with a spell book that dares to treat the readers like intelligent adults. It starts us off not with any New Age claptrap but a dash of cold water in the face, in the form of some sober economic observations. He follows up his dark grey forecast with a mix of sound economic advice and some practical magic designed to pull the odds in your favor. This is no get-rich-quick screed, but a level-headed approach to survive some major economic changes coming in the near future, if not already here.

Much-needed comprehensive theory of rationality

"The Architecture of Reason" is a well-respected work that is somewhat unique in the current philosophic literature. Most works on rationality focus on one of two aspects - (a) epistemology and theoretical reason, concerned with justification and its connection to knowledge, or (b) practical reason, largely the subject matter of meta-ethics and moral psychology. Perhaps because of the different natures of the two fields, and the divergence in the literature, relatively few authors write with an appreciation for both.

Robert Audi, who moved from Nebraska to take the Business Ethics chair at Notre Dame shortly after writing this book, is one of the few philosophers with a deep understanding of both fields and the fascinating connections between them. This is a work dedicated to exploring the structural parallels between the theoretical and practical spheres of reason, how they are similar, and how they are different. Audi advocates an internalist view, based in what he calls a moderate, flexible foundationalism.

The work is divided into eight chapters, each roughly 30 pages in length. Chapters 1-2 provide an overview of Audi's view of theoretical reason, while chapters 3-6 detail the structural parallels between theoretical reason and practical reason, as well as the basis of concepts such as reasonableness and altruism. Chapter 7 provides an extremely insightful and detailed discussion of relativity in various forms (a concept to often bandied about without precision, even in philosophy). Chapter 8 concludes with a discussion of the global characteristics of a rational person, and how rationality can be viewed as something like a virtue concept.

All in all, this is a detailed and well-argued work that can act as an advanced introduction to the topics (especially for those with some background in philosophy, but perhaps only a light background in epistemology), but also is an important original contribution in its own right. It is also the only major work dedicated to a holistic treatment of both sides of rationality in contemporary philosophy, to my knowledge.

A definite maybe...

Having taken the better part of this last semester reading this book, I find myself with no strong inclination to rate this book in any particular direction.
As far as content goes it's rather thorough, Audi does manage to give a complete bottom up view of rationality. But, as he gets into the later stages of the book where the topic turns to ethical issues he gets a little presumptuous. Another issue I had was with Audi's homemade words. I recognize the fact that certain areas of philosophy have created their own technical nomenclature but some of his words are a bit of a stretch even for my liberal mind. Further, while not as hard to read as many other philosophy texts this was by no means a pleasure read, and if it had not been required reading I would have opted for more pleasurable tasks such as watching paint dry.
If you have a background in philosophy or epistemology (or are disposed to masochistic habits) I suggest you buy this book. After all, Audi does pull together his entire theory of rationality into one book, and this is no easy feat for anyone. PREFACE.

As time rolls on changes take place that we never dreamed of. Today family history and tradition are the prevailing topics. Realizing the family of Lents to be a large and patriotic one, the author and publisher of this work attempted to collect information on the Lent family. After about seven years or more of hard work, entailing a large expense collecting the necessary information — both biographical and genealogical — to warrant the publication of a work of this kind, it is now submitted to the reader for his criticism. The family is one of the most widely extended in the United States. This fact made the preparation of the work very difficult. This being the first Lent family history ever gotten up, made it a still greater undertaking, but " where there's a will there's a way." So after working diligently and energetically, tired often, discouraged at times, we kept at it. Finally the information came in rapidly, and this gave us new vigor, and at last we came off victor.

Several persons had undertaken to publish a book of the Lent Family,
but after a time they gave it up. It was too hard an undertaking — the
work covering the very long period of two hundred and sixty-five years.

As we perused the time-worn leaves from the old records, an impression was left upon our minds that can never be forgotten. To know the hand that rocked the cradle of our ancestors, handled the pen that wrote the signature some two hundred years ago ! Some of the names in Dutch had to be interpreted, while others were clear and plain in English. If our forefathers could but arise from their long slumbering places of abode, and know the great multitude that have lived since their time, they would be amazed.

The name was originally " Ryck Abrahamson," who took the name of
" van Lent." The van signifying of or from the land of Lent in Holland.

This name van Lent was retained by some of the family until the last cen-
tury, when it was finally dropped, and they used the plain name " Lent."
We find also one or two who spell their name with the final *' e" — Lente.
The letter was placed there for reasons not known. The last and only one
who spells his name " Lente " is the Rev. James Rapelye Lente, a retired
Protestant Dutch Reformed minister residing at Washingtonville, N. Y.

There may be errors in the book, but we trust not many, as we have
been very careful to have it as accurate as possible. If errors are found
we wish you would send them to the publisher, so that he can make a
record of them, in case he should issue another edition.

We trust the book will get into the hands of all the family of Lents,
especially here represented, as we think it will be invaluable to them in
the way of making known their family lines, &c.

Outside of the Lent family we wish to thank Mr. E. M. Ruttenber, the
historian ; Mr. Samuel Ritchie, Mr. Frank S. Hull, Mr. Hiram Lozier and
Darwin W. Esmond, Esq., of Newburgh, N. Y., and Rev. Mr. Force, of
Montrose, N. Y., and Franklin Couch, Esq., of Peekskill, N. Y., for valu-
able assistance given us.

Wow.

This book probably will be of interest to two groups of people: professional historians, which I'm not, and descendants of the van Lent family, which I am. As such it's a treasure, despite its almost exclusive focus on males over the centuries. I used it as a resource when putting together the family's genealogy, and found it most helpful. The "wow" is for the circuitous paths that our forebears took, because of which we are who and where we are.

The Bible for Any Dialysis Patient

"The Handbook of Dialysis" is a must have for anyone who is a patient on dialysis or who is the caretaker of someone on dialysis. This book is written with a Nephrologist or Nephrology nurse in mind, but patients and caretakers can learn a great deal as well. It explains the whole dialysis process including reuse, vascular accesses, anticoagulation, nutrition, infections, sleep disorder, etc. The dialysis process affects one's whole system.

This book is a MUST for dialysis nurses. It is easy to read and is sectioned according to body systems. I carry it with me for quick reference and consider it to be the "bible" for nephrology nurses.
